hello,

long time lurker 2nd time posting. My question is, I bought a corsair vengeance 8gb stick, and would like to know if I should buy a second stick? The reason I ask is because I was playing battlefield 4 yesterday on ultra settings at 1080p, and my CPU was disturbingly hot. It went as high as 90-91. Attached is a picture screenshot of my computer I built on saturday (first gaming desktop). I am currently using the stock cooler that came with the CPU, but I also have the cooler master 212. I plan on installing that asap.

This is the model I bought off newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233218&cm_re=vengeance_ddr3_8_gb-_-20-233-218-_-Product

Do I need to buy another chip? Did I make an error in purchase? Also, how much were ram prices years ago? I read that ram prices dropped but now it seemed it has spiked up?

thank you.

Your RAM shouldn't affect your CPU temps. What cooler do you have on your processor? I'm guessing you're using the stock setup, and that probably isn't good enough for system intensive games like BF4. I can recommend a few aftermarket coolers to you if you are still using the stock heatsink/fan.

Edit: I see now where you say you are using the stock cooler. My apologies. The 212 should run your temps down to a much better range, but you need to make sure you have good thermal paste on, and that it is applied correctly. I can point you towards some if you'd like, and link a video that will show you how to apply it.

On a side note: max temps for your CPU are 74C, so to avoid damaging the processor, I'd recommend not playing BF4 on ultra settings until you get a better cooler installed.

Yes, please do link me that information. i did not know max temp was 74C. The 212 comes with thermal paste as well, do i need to purchase this? what brand do you suggest? a friend advised i get arctic something.

I use Arctic Silver (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0AJ33T2869&cm_re=artic_silver-_-35-100-007-_-Product), and have for years. It works great, and is relatively inexpensive, especially since one tube will last for 15-20+ uses.

I don't know what came with your 212, so it may be fine, but I know the Arctic Silver works well. Does the paste that came with the cooler have any identifying information on it, or is it just a generic thing? Also, is it in a tube, or a flat piece you just lay on the CPU?

Here's a video showing how to properly apply thermal paste from tube (like the Arctic Silver): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hNgFNH7zhQ
