Well many apps requrequire more than 1.5 gb ram nowadays , smart phones are computers too , our needs are getting bigger and bigger when it comes to technology. As the time goes the apps will be more demanding memory usage will become bigger too (a really good example = our own pcs)
Never heard of an 8GB RAM smartphone, as far as I know, highest RAM is 6GB seen in OnePlus 3 (in example) but more RAM means more multitasking in android smartphones so it's not a bad thing

I think it is silly to be honest. I have 3GB RAM currently in my Le Max 2 and I think it's overkill. I suppose eventually we will be utilising that amount when the likes of 4K resolution screens are mainstream on mobile devices, however at this stage it seems to be just a gimmicky selling point.
