Hi,

I have an old Linux box I built 7+ years ago (pre multi-core technology) and I'm looking to do a major upgrade. I currently have 2x74Gig WD Raptors (first generation), for the OS/SWAP, and 5x2TB WD Caviar Black. I was thinking of going to a modern 6-Core i7-970 (LGA1366) and I want a motherboard with all the new goodies. So far I've found some enticing ones but I haven't found one with 8 SATA3 Ports. I'd like to replace the 2 Raptors by super fast OZ SSDS and I'd like to upgrade the Caviars, in the future, to whatever is out then (probably with a SATA3 interface) since I usually keep my computers for a long time.

An acceptable compromise would be a board with 2xSATA3 and a PCI-X slot, since I have a very inexpensive ($100) SuperMicro SATA2 controller with 8 ports and I have no reason to believe they won't make a SATA3/4 in the future.

However I've been unable to find a board with all the goodies I want. Is it a matter of time?

Erasmo.

You likely won't find one with eight SATA3 ports. The most I've seen is six, and NewEgg has only one that fits that description -- the ASRock X58 Extreme6.

The upcoming X79 chipset for Socket 2011 Sandy Bridge "E" will have eight SATA3 ports plus the standard four SATA2 ports. You'll have to wait until October or so for that.
