[SOLVED] 9 Year Old Corsair Professional HX750W - Should I Replace?

Hi everyone,

I've got a question. I currently have a perfectly fine Corsair Professional HX750W that I bought back in 2011 for my work/gaming PC. It's going strong still, with no problems.

Now for the question, should I upgrade it? Or should I keep it going? I am looking to buy a 3080. Currently been using a GTX 680 that I bought back in 2011, and it's been a fantastic card, but I'm looking to play new games on Ultra.

My monitor is 1920x1200/1080 (the 3080 will overkill it, but I'm looking to upgrade it in the future. It's going on 11 or 10 years old now, but still amazing)

So what does everything think? Also, if you could recommend me an amazing PSU that I can use for another 10+ years, that would be greatly appreciated. Preferably one I can buy at Canada Computers. Newegg is overpriced because of import/shipping fees, etc, and I don't trust Amazon for electronics.

Probably Corsair AX 850w. AX is their top tier but starts from 850. Next level down to 750w are HXi and RMx.

I was actually looking into the Corsair AX/HX 750w/850w but they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

I'll do some research into the Be Quite Straight Power 11's (since they are in stock at Canada Computers) as I don't know too much about that brand. They're reliable and well built?

Yeah the Be Quiet! Straight Power 11 is a top tier PSU from Be Quiet!.

See alot of people make assumptions, but would really like to see real power usage from reviews. Not saying you're wrong, but it's abit soon do be so definitive.
First, i ain't talking about it's 750W rated power, it's just an old PSU, not so good by modern terms, barely mid-range.
Second, RTX3080 reviews with power draw figures are all over the place. Total rating of PSU you'll need depends on the CPU but generally treat RTX3080 as almost 400W GPU and calculate accordingly.

Ok.... So here's my 2 cents on ANY 10 year+ old PSU, regardless of quality...

Capacitors, as they age, will decrease in capacitance while the ESR increases. This doesn't typically impact capacitors that are simply "meant to hold a charge" like the bulk caps, but the caps on the secondary side that filter ripple. As ESR increases, the ripple increases. That means that while the PSU is still outputting a proper DC voltage, the ripple is probably higher than it was 5 or 10 years ago. That ripple has to eventually be filtered downstream. But parts like motherboards, graphics cards, etc. don't have nearly as robust L&C filtering as the actual power supply. So then the parts downstream are stressed and can fail prematurely.
