Hey Guys,

I'm sure you've been asked this question to death at this stage, but I'm not so much asking for a solution as much as a clarification.

I have a AMD R9 290x 4GB GPU, and with GTA 5 maxed it consumes maybe half of the VRAM. Fine and Dandy.

My CPU is an I3 2120 3.3 GHZ. I know, bit of a disparity between GPU and CPU, but I have to amke do.

I have 8GB of RAM, if that's also relevant.

What's confusing me is that GTA 5 seems to hog 90% + of my CPU and the frame rates are awful. If it was max settings or in any way consistent, I'd accept it as a problem with the CPU.

What's galling to me is that if I lower all the settings to the absolute floor, I'm talking N64 level graphics at 800 x 600 res, I still get frame rates dipping to the 20s and my CPU usage skyrocketing to the 90+ %.

Could this by my CPU? Or is it just shoddy programming on Rockstar's part?

Solution
It's your cpu.
Your cpu is a dual core with hyper threading.
GTA wants 4 cores, you have 4 virtual cores but only 2 real cores.
This is why I recommend i5-4460 minimum.

Well that's an absolute kick in the balls from Rockstar.
Thanks for the answer.

It's the way of the future. Most gamers have had true quad cores for a long time now. Developing to use 4 threads highly increases what they can do game engine wise. If they develop for dual cores the rest of us have overkill systems, and they run into processing limits.

I got i5-3450s and 100% cpu usage.. Game is running good, untill I drive fast.. then gta is freezing as hell. My cpu should meet minimum requirements and even recomended almost, cuz rockstar said Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz for minimum and Core i5-3470 3.2GHz for recomended. My is 3450 so wtf?

Are you using Self radio? It`s very laggy and needs a lot CPU power.

I`m also getting stuttering while driving but it`s not CPU bottleneck. While playing my HDD usage often jumps to 100% and then the game freezes and I get FPS drops. I don`t know why. I defragged my hard drive which didn`t help but maybe GTA is using virtual memory.
