PSP may miss launch target

10/5/2004 7:29:56 PM, by Eric Bangeman

Depending on which analyst is doing the talking, the picture surrounding the
debut of Sony's new gaming handheld, the PSP is starting to look cloudy.
Right now, the PSP - which will feature a 480x272 4.3" widescreen LCD along
with 802.11b and USB 2.0 connectivity - is set for a Japanese launch in
December, with the North American debut following in March 2005.

One scenario has the PSP being delayed into next year due to hardware
issues. According to an analyst note released by brokerage Piper Jaffray &
Co., Sony has not yet solved all the PSP's technical issues.

We are hearing that the platform has other issues such as thermal problems
(transistors are running very hot) and a very short battery life (90
minutes) that will almost certainly delay the launch.

It's expected. This is Sony's first attempt at a portable and the thing
seems like it was designed by the marketing team, not the engineering.
Seems like the fact that it was a portable was a complete afterthought,
unlike the DS.

I thought that it was quite clear I was stating opinion... hence the word
"seems" instead of "was".

You know the difference, Corky? :) Get a clue.

I heard the battery life is 10 hours for games and 2 hours for movies. I'm
not planning to watch movies on it anyways.

Ooh, insults. Well Einstein, guess you didn't pay attention that you said
"seems" when you were talking about the design. That can hardly be
automatically interpreted as an opinion of the title header you pulled from
your rectum. It didn't say, it "seems" like there is a 90 min battery life.
Don't try to backpedal by playing with the words. You were busted Mr. Sosa,
accept it.

Ooh, hypocricy.

I'm guessing that was a compliment, seeing as you have a problem with

It's all bullshit...don't even worry about your precious battery life,
until it's released and reviewed by the public, not nintendo, not a
magazine wether or not it's affiliated with sony doesn't matter...If
you feel like replying to me, don't waste your time..just dropping
some solid wisdom on this..I'm not bashing sony, this goes for the
Nintendo DS as well..

Sony will ship the PlayStation Portable for ¥20,790 ($195), the Japanese
consumer electronics giant said today.

The PSP-1000 - to give the device its official model number - will go in
sale on 12 December, achieving Sony's goal of shipping the handheld by
the end of the year. It is due to debut in the US and Europe by the end
of March 2005.

At that point, Sony said, non-gaming content - ie. music and movies -
will go on sale encoded on the handheld's unique 1.8GB Universal Media
Disc (UMD) optical drive format.
Sony PlayStation Portable Box

The PSP's Japanese ship date has been the subject of much speculation,
most of it centring on Sony's ability to meet the deadline. A company
executive recently admitted that the chosen date would be largely
determined by games publishers. The deadline would be achieved only if
they were able to offer sufficient launch titles, he said.

Well, Sony today announced some 21 titles will go on sale in December.
Titles from Sony itself include a multiplayer golf game and what appears
to be a network messaging product.

Touting the unit's WLAN functionality, Sony said up to 16 PSPs can talk
to each other in 'ad hoc' mode. There's also infra-red and USB 2.0 for
networking and connectivity. A Memory Stick Duo Pro slot paves the way
for expansion. Indeed, Sony will offer a 32MB Memory Stick with suitable
PSP branding.

Other accessories include remote-control headphones and - crucially - a
battery pack. Sony said the 280g PSP will run for between four and six
hours on a single charge; four to five hours if you're watching movies
rather than playing games. Power comes from an internal Lithium-Ion
battery. ®

First PSTwo, then GTA: SA, and now PSP, simply a wonderful time.

Not to mention:

Ratchet & Clank: UYA
Raw v Smackdown
Halo2
Half-Life2

It sure is a wonderful time to be a gamer.

http://www.xe.com/ - 20,790 JPY = 106.78 GBP

But there is *NO* way it'll be available in the UK for ~£100, our taxes
are silly, and we enjoy being ripped off *cough*

I'll be importing mine from the US, as there's no region locking, and
I've already got a UK-US power transformer for my GCN & SP.
