Okay, now that I've got that out of my system, Green Snake is cool. I mean,
hot. Well, it's cool AND hot, if you know what I mean.

The special effects are kinda corny (the snake itself is pretty obviously a
model, for starters), but I've learnt to allow for that when it comes to
Hong Kong actioners. An interesting take on the old Chinese folktale, that
blends pathos and action relatively well. The magic is completely
over-the-top, but hey, myths tend to be like that.

Dragon Inn: now this one looks good. I got the recent DVD release with the
remastered picture; as a bonus, for once the subtitles are top-notch. Less
world-shaking magic, but wow, the swordfights rock my world. The final duel
in particular is a blast. I'm reminded of a certain franchise featuring
lightsabers and desert worlds....

I am now officially a Brigitte Lin fanboy. So far, she's the only actor in
these movies who manages to say as much without words as with them. It's a
unique gift in a genre not known for subtlety.

Admit it -- you just want to cause an amusing flamewar.

Cest vrai! This movie is a lot of fun, has a great Indipop soundtrack,
and you could do a hell of lot worse than Green Snake for inspiration
of Shih, Hsien, Wu Lung and Akashic characters...note the scene where
the monk attempts to maintain meditation while demonic (and sexy!)
projections of his subconscious attempt to distract him...

Heh. Is that the one with the Ric Meyers commentary? Those are always
fun.^^

Welcome to the club! You've probably already seen Bride With White
Hair? If not, then consider it your dues (did you know that the
character of Xena was based on the Bride?)! Also, take in Swordsman II
and III (also known as The East Is Red) for more of her amazing
performances. Tho many didn't, I quite liked Deadful Melody, campy
title and all! Of course, she's great in it, but the other characters
are pretty cool, too. And the English dub is a hoot!

Brigitte Lin would make a pretty cool Midnight Abyssal...

Dex,
recommending The Duel...

Great stuff. Of course, I have no idea what the song-and-dance routine at
the end was about, but neither does anyone else, and it looks and sounds
good anyway.

Very different vibe to wuxia, though.

It was the Broadway ending, where all the cast comes out for the final
farewell; heroes, villains, live or dead.

Well, yes, I know it's a Broadway ending, but I'm not really seeing why
they wanted to have such a thing. Unless it's perhaps a riff off the
quasi-musical scenes earlier, where the peasants are working in time to
music.

That was my take. Not only working in time, nay, but verily creating
the music!

A musical without the singing?
