Bro-in-law keeps telling me to save 150$cdn and get a radeon 9200, i kno it has no direct X 9 support, and his defense was that you can install D9 on it... (slaps forehead) Well of course, but it doesnt play well, right? it says it will play all the games he ever wants for a good couple years...

Make the game work for you, not work you into a new computer

i have a radeon 9200 and i cant get rallisport challenge running smooth on a athlon xp2400 when i play it with high graphics.the same things with ither game.on the other side i can play call of duty or max paine 2with full graphics and a resolution of 1280x1024 running soomthly. it is true that the radeon 9200 will play every game in next years but no in high resolutions or graphics with some games. so if you have the money i really recommend that you go for the 9600 pro .

Radeon 9600 PRO is nearly 2x better than R9200

DX9 titles will play on the R9600P just fine, and they will have the DX9 goodies that an R9200 will NEVER have. Also let him know that an R9000Pro and an R9100 will kick that sorry little R9200non-pro's butt, and for cheaper still.

Considering an R9600pro can be had in Canada for $229 for a BBA card, then if you can afford it it's definitely a nice card to get and is more prepared for the extras of future games than that R9200 which is only a DX 8.1 card.

And there is no way you are playing HALO at 1024x768+ with the R9200 without some FPS issues. MaxPayne2 doesn't requires wicked FPS. I played the Demo yesterday, and cranked it up to 6X AA with AF and felt no pain at 1280x1024x32, so I doubt that MP2 really makes low FPS noticeable (heck half the time I'm in bullet time).

If you want a GOOD card that will let you see things that his card can't, for a good price, then get the R9600Pro, but don't pay more than $240 before GST+PST if you do.
Also make sure to get a GOOD card (the BuiltByAti cards are good and cheap now, and are guaranteed good).

Captain Obvious says that its obvious you can install DirectX 9, Play DirectX 9 games, but will never actually see any of the DirectX 9 features!

Just about every game has DX 8 or 7 support for older cards. That is what you will get!

The Captain recommends you get a R9600Pro! Sensible price with full DX 9 functionality!

OMG! D00D, DX9 games will play on a DX7 cards, and play fine at that, when you install DX9. They simply loose the new eyecandy that DX9 offers.

Here's a comparison, the Ti4200 (DX8) to the FX5200 (DX9). The FX5200 is so SLOW at rendering DX9 features, that the Ti4200 actually plays a DX9 game more smoothly...because it can't render the DX9 features!

But the 9200 is a slow card otherwise, so if you have the money, get the 9600 Pro.

Crash, also the FX5200 SUX! Even in DX8 the GF4ti would beat it.

However yes even with and FX5600U the GF4ti would play faster in DX8 than it in DX9 (maybe even an FX5900).

BTW, did I mention the FX5200 Sux!

Yes, well I was more concerned with comparing the lowest 4-Ti card with the lowest FX card, but you're also correct.

Also I have seen them locally for $229 (sorry no web link). I have even seen white-box OEM ATI's for $209.

NCIX has the Sapphires for $220;

I've also seen powercolor for $199 but I wouldn't recommend Powercolor, even at that price. Although still it would be far better than any R9200 (even more so a non-pro).

anitec... where are they? and how expensive is their shipping and handling? and item insurance? after all that sometimes its better to just walk outside and grab one at a futureshop or 'el cheapo' looking computer shop

Make the game work for you, not work you into a new computer
