I have a case and optical drive but was wondering if there was any changes I should consider on this build?

I would add a "K" series i5 to OC it and Z97 and a little bit better PSU for the 970

Is your budget 950, or around 750? You are cutting 200 bucks off your listed budget, there are better options available.

950$ the original build had a monitor and keyboard but I didn't need those, so keeping within 950 what improvements can I do?

Improving upon the current build listed, look at a better quality PSU, such as an XFX model.
Look into an SSD, like the 850 EVO.
Swap the RAM for a 2x4GB kit, with CAS9 latency.
Maybe look at a different aftermarket 970, such as the MSI gaming.

If you still have more budget, check out the 4690k and a Z97 board.

Unless you are going to overclock you dont need the Z97 board.
I would recommend getting the ASRock H97 Pro4, and with the saved money on the motherboard pick up a 120GB SSD.
That PSU is actually lower quality, get a 550w XFX unit.
