[SOLVED] 9500 GT & 1440p HDMI

OK, got my grandfather a 32" 1440p. ViewSonic VX3211-2K-MHD 32 Inch IPS WQHD 1440p Monitor with 99% sRGB Color Coverage HDMI VGA and DisplayPort.

His computer has a Zotec 9500 GT GPU, with VGA, DVI, and HDMI. GPU says it supports 2560x1600 max res.

The monitor came with an HDMI cable. I also tried two HDMI cables I had from my ROKU and cable box. Both say "high speed" on them.

Connected HDMI to HDMI and can only get 1080p.

I went to buy a 1.4 cable but started to think maybe the HDMI input on the GPU is slower/lower/ 1.1 or something - not 1.4 and doesn't allow for 1440p. So I didn't buy another cable since I was told that if it says "high speed" then it's a 1.4/4k whatever.

Started to get an HDMI to DVI adapter but they were single link. Looking at the ones on Amazon and many only do 1080p/1200p or some are even lying, saying they do 4k but don't.

So... i'm not having any luck trying to find out if the HDMI port on the GPU is too slow for 1440p. Does that seem plausible? Don't want to buy a $20 adapter for nothing.

Also updated the GPU driver hoping that might be it, but no.

He's over 80 and had bad eye sight on his 19" monitor. lol Now he can use the computer without his glasses, even, but he paid for and should have 1440p!

9500GT can do 2560x1600 by dual-link DVI only. As HDMI is electrically equivalent to DVI but only uses enough wires for single-link, the implementation of HDMI on that card is only HDMI 1.0 and can only do 1080p.

Your grandfather needs a newer GPU. Even something really cheap like a GT 710 is faster than the 9500GT and has the needed HDMI 1.4. You might be able to find something that old and slow for less than the price of an adapter--the recyclers around here sell those GPUs for $2.95 to $5 because integrated graphics have been faster for many years, so the only people who buy them are getting them for ancient Core 2 PCs. And people who still use such PCs in 2019 are understandably very cheap!

Technically, HDMI 2.0 is required for 4k at 60Hz
