960 or 970

Should I buy a 960 now and buy an 980 later on down the line when I have some money or buy the 970 now and not upgrade until the Pascal chips become a lower price or purchase one of the GPUs in the Volta chipset, which are set to come out in 2018. Any other GPU recommendations are also welcomed. Thanks.

AMD R9 380 is a better choice than 960; also R9 390 8GB is the same price as 970, but has 5.5GB more VRAM

A gtx 970 would be the better of the two, it gives full performance now and into the future where the 960 may falter when more than 2GB of vid mem is used. Mind you @ 1080p this won't happen often.

Would the 960 be fine for 1080p gaming for the next year at medium settings, I don't mind much about the graphical settings for the time being, as I know I will be upgrading soon anyway.

You'll be playing on very high- ultra with the 970. I'd also look at the R9 390 though, it has 8G OF V RAM, its futureproof.
