I was wondering if anyone could make it clear to me exactly
what the noticeable differences (if any) there would be to
game performance when using a 9600 XT with 256 Mb or 128?

Ok the 256 meg version is slower in most senario. More memory means more latency when trying to acces the memory.
256 meg will only benefit you when using really large textures ie 1600X1200/8X aniso/4X+ FSAA.
So I reccomand going with the 128 meg version since it should be a bit cheaper and they sometimes use better quality ram with the 128meg version.

Just to clarify, more memory doesn't necessarily mean more latency, but cards with 256 megs usually use slightly cheaper memory that has higher latency.

like labbbby says, 256 megs is really only useful at ungodly high resolutions when running Antialiassing and ansio. So since the 9600XT isn't powerful enough to run AA/Ansio at those super high resolutions anyway, 256 megs is essentially useless with this card.

I agree with everyone above, go with 128 MB. Unless, of course you care about the size of your e-penis. I know a few guys bragging to me about how their Radeon 9000 has 256 Ram while they say they are sorry for me, cuase my 9600Pro only has 128.

I'll put a 64mb R9500Pro (yes they are out there, scary eh!?!) against an FX5200-256mb or FX5600-256mb any day.

No, actually, I'm not. I might have exagerated their responses a little, but for the most part that's what they say. Here's something else for ya. I know a guy who was telling me about his new system, which has a Barton 2500+ AXP, with ddr 333 ram. He then proceeds to tell me that he is buying ddr 400 becuase it is faster. He doesn't seem to relize that his fsb is only at 333..... and this is the same guy who is bragging about how much 133ter his Radeon 9600 Pro 256 is over my 9600Pro 128. (the 9000 with 256 were different people)

Sigh.......my area needs major help.

yeah thats weird i guess her buys the ram to make him feel better about his system.

what can u do?

Well, your friend does have a point about putting the pc3200 in with the Barton 2500+. The 2500+ is essentially an underclocked 3200+, running at 166*11 instead of 200*11. As long as he adjusts the fsb to 200 he's got himself a nice upgrade. He is still completely wrong about the 256mb vs. 128mb Radeon, though. You've totally got him on that.

True, but he would buy 'el cheapo ram, that probably has a CAS of 4 or something.

The problem with my area is that I'm positive I'm the only one who goes on boards, and reviews articles. They're all busy playing whatever new game, while I'm reading reviews and posting on boards. Then I go play games :)
I wonder what the reaction would be if I mentioned latency?

256 MB VRAM is completely useless with Radeon 9600XT.

Moreover, 256 MB cards are more expensive and often come with inferior memory

As of right now, 256 MB is useless. None of today's games can actually take advantage of 256. So 128 is fine for right now. In the future 256 may become useful for Doom 3 and Half Life 2. So save your money and get the 128 MB version.

yep. another vote for 128mb.
Ive got a r9800pro with "only' 128mb and it runs everything fine. More than enough video ram.

Like what someone else said the only advantage will come running insane 1600x1200+ resolutions with high levels of AA and Anso. And doing that on a r9600 will lead to unplayable framerates.

And given the price difference between a 128mb and a 256mb... you save some serious $$$.

I know the way myself.

Seriously you could do a 3 second check to see if you should comment on this. You were even too stoopid to do that!

And, almost all the reviews mentioned 256mb, not all reviewed those however.

Hmmm, [H] has it right prominent on their first page;

Err, sorry about that. I was in a rush and wanted to make a quick post on what I knew at the time. TheGreatGrapeApe, I'm new at THGC, I wanted to post at a board for some time now that is related to my hobbies. I have found the perfect place, THGC. I was not trying to be a troll, so I don't see why you had to flame me for being wrong. I don't think that's the "adult" way of telling someone that they're wrong..

Well I already answered you in the PM you sent me.

But let me just respond to this one little item of yours.

I was not trying to be a troll, so I don't see why you had to flame me for being wrong. I don't think that's the "adult" way of telling someone that they're wrong..
So what you're saying is that 'laughing out loud' and saying people are wrong while providing incorrect information is the 'adult' way of doing things? No, I would say a little research to back up and in this case prevent that laugh would be the adult thing to do.

Don't let lack of time (who isn't short on time) or exuberance be an excuse for standing on a soap box in order to announce your shortcomings with authority to the community.

I'll leave it at my PM response, because I said I'd cut you some slack and I will. But seriously watch, learn, and familiarize yourself with your hobby, then post.
Lesson 1, don't try and contradict about 10 posts preceeding you, the others may be on to something you haven't quite realized yet (especially if many of them have been here a while and seem to know what they are talking about). You sure wouldn't want to look foolish after all the preceeding good advice you simply ignored in order to post your 'view'.

Welcome to THGC, good luck, looks like you'll need it!

i noticed that people who dont know much about video cards base everything on the amount of ram. its like they automatically assume 128 is gonna be better than 64, when in some cases its not.
