9600gt help

I Have a pentium d stock at 3.0 ghz, 2 gigs of ram, dvd burner, and 2 x 80 gb hard drive
Psu is 400w: Output +12v 12A, +5v 25A, +3.3V 12A. i just ordered sparkle 9600gt gddr3 1gb graphic card.
will the graphic card work on my comp.

Your +12 volt at 12 amp is really low if you only have one rail!

you'd end up burning the card or your whole system as well. if you're lucky enough only the psu will be dead after.

i also have a spare psu, brand is delta electronics: 3.3V 20A, +12V 20A, +5V 20A, -5V 0.5A, +5Vsb 2A, max capacity 300w.

can i combine these 2 psu to make the card work?
turning the 2nd psu on by shorting green wire (PS_ON) to ground.

the graphic card arrived this morning, the card doesn't seem to have 6pin pci connector. on the box its written "now 40% more power efficient".

Hi, This is a 9600GT. It doesn't use much power. I use one in a Q6600 based system with a 350 watt PSU with no problem. If you have any reasonable 400 watt PSU this is not remotely a challenge for the PSU. Install the card and enjoy. It will be fine. There are many monitors that can pick voltage off your MB (e.g. Everest Ultimate edition, sissoftware sandra, etc), your BIOS may also have a monitor with ability to shut down if the voltage is out of range.

Your 400 watt PSU confuses me. You said "Output +12v 12A, +5v 25A, +3.3V 12A."
That (very roughly) says 12 X 12 = 144 watts on 12v, 5 X 25 = 125 watt on 5V, 3.3 X 12 = 40 watts on 3.3V. 144+125+40 is not close to 400 watts. I think you left out a +12V number. See if you have TWO +12V. If not then double check this is a 400 watt PSU. (I think this is what the first appender was pointing out)

This is the ratings on a good 420 PSU "+3.3V@20A, +5V@20A, +12V1@17A, +12V2@17A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@2.5A" Compare it to your 400 watt PSU, there are many amps missing on +12V.

doubled checked it , there is only one +12V rail

I'd have guessed the Pentium D and the video card both pulled from +12V. With only 12 amps available for both your video card power budget is really small.

Can you look at the sticker on the power supply? Usually it's yellow and gives a few more details like "the sum of +3.3v and +5 cannot exceed XX watts". Sometimes you can see the sticker with the PSU still installed. What does the sticker call out for +12V? How do they get to 400 watts with only 12 amps on +12v ?

Your 300 watt delta is better than that one. This is a typical cheap overrated unit.

Since your new card does not have a power connection it is more likely to run on your 300watt

like rolli59 said, your 9600 would just fine on your 300W.
That card need only a little power when u compare with 9800GT or even HD4xxx / HD5xxx.
