Just a quicky...which would be the better performer in the following system: XP2100+, 512Mb PC2100, Epox KT333.

Thanks!

u should do some research on how problem riddles the 9600 series is before u go out and buy one. sure, the benchmark is impressive but stability wise it is crap. i'm for one never going to buy a ati product again.

The 9600 is an impressive card. its not cause you had a bad experience thats its crap. Most likely your problem is behind the computer screan.
Stay away from the 9800se definitevly go with the 9600 pro/xt...

The answer is a little more complex than you would think. The R9600XT can have many variations, and the R9800SE can have 2 main variations.

Under most circumstances, the R9600XT beats the R9800SE-128bit memory by a good margin, and loses to the R9800SE-256bit memory by a small margin.

There are unfortunately very few R9800SE 256bit versions out there (but more than when the SE was first released).

However if you do find a true R9800SE 256bit vs an R9600XT (not an XT lite with TSOP, or a Powercolor 'XT' which is really an overclocked R9600PRO), then take whichever is cheaper. They are very close in performance.

The R9800SE and (pro lites) both require FLOPPY power connectors (some [very few] have Molex power connectors), whereas the R9600XT doesn't require aditional power beyond that provided by the AGP slot.

Stay away from the 128 bit SE, but otherwise go with the package that has what you like best. Go for the coolest looking box.

Cheers GGA and everyone. What about the 5700? I nly throw that up in the light og the game compatability issue I get with my 9800pro...not that most cant be sorted its just hassle.

5700's a good card but it's not worth it when the 5900XT (AKA SE) is about the same price.

The 5900XT is the price/performance leader right now IMHO.

Go and look the Vga Chart Part 3 in Tom's grapic guide. DONT EVEN THINK OF A 9800SE 128B!!! Go for the 9600XT. Its a very good choice.

Well I agree with Cleeve, for the price of the FX5700U you can get the much better than all of the above FX5900SE/XT/LX/EPV/Whatever they wanna call it.

The regular FX5700 is well below all of them, and close to the R9800SE 128bit range, but a little better than an R9600non-pro.
The FX5700Ultra trades benchmarks with the R9600XT, with the XT leading in more of the more modern games. But it's much closer than it used to be. But at that point I would chose the FX5900SE/XT variant. I don't think I would recommedn the FX5700U anymore to anyone, simply because of the benifits of the FX5900SE.

ok 9600xt is better than 9800se, u would happen want to swap ur 9800se with my 9600xt? actually i m just looking for tom's hammer so maybe i can knock some sense into my 9600xt.

If you're suffering problems after upgrading from a geforce 2 (or whatever) to a 9600XT, you probably either didn't remove the old drivers properly, or your power supply is no longer good enough.

Power supply not really so much of an issue for the R9600 series, draws even less power than a GF4ti. Unless the power supply sucks terribly, that shouldn't be the problem.

Damn! you guys are right the 5900xt is only about £10 more than the 5700! (And Nooooooo its not for my system, my 9800 pro keeps me warm at night, its actually for a friends I am building - trying to get as much umph as I can on a tight budget)....Another good question to ask now I guess is: would this fit into a shuttle system?

thanks for your help again folks.

It will fit in a Shuttle SFF but I would be a little concerned about the PSU. The new XGST61G4 comes with a 25OW silentX PSU, whereas most of the others are 22oW, but even then I think you'd have trouble using an FX5900, and maybe even an FX5700U with those power supplies. The R9600XT/PRO may be the best option in that case. But for the most part the FX5900 should fit no problem (I don't think it takes up the PCI slot the way the Ultra does), the only issue may be power IMO. And with any GOOD graphics card I would try and leave the PCI slot open anyway just for air flow around the HSF.

Anywho, that's my two frames worth.
