2 days ago when i first installed drivers for my gtx 970, when i was loading games it was automatically putting me at 4k, now i can't change any game/desktop resolution to higher than 1080p, why?

Just enable & tick all the options , you'll then get them as useable resolutions.

1080p, I know this seems obvious to not display higher resolutions but I was using the same monitor the other day when it was allowing me to chose higher resolutions. I thought it was because of Nvidias down sampling feature

did you turn off DSR?

Where do I find that? I upgraded from a 750 ti so there's a lot if new stuff here. I don't recall changing any settings though

All what options? In nvidia control panel?

Yes as in the link I gave you , open DSR , tick all the available boxes

You do not need to follow the secondary bit regarding geforce experience .

The new scaled resolutions will become available in games anyway.

I'd argue its worthless on desktop , works well for older titles where there aren't any decent anti aliasing options.

For me, DSR simply renders the individual frames in 4k, then downgrades to a 1080p frame. Makes for higher gpu usage and a much clearer detailed picture. Biggest downside is it also renders any and all print, including menus, to the point where words are too small to be legible. Sucks in skyrim where I'm constantly in and out of inventory etc and any subtitles or chat is impossible to read. Definitely not blurry at all, but still unusable. Changed to a 1440p render and all great.

The reason you aren't seeing resolutions higher than 1080p anymore is because of the setting that automatically adjusts for viable resolutions according to the monitor. Since your monitor is only capable of a max supported resolution of 1080p, that's as high as its going to show. You can turn that off and you'll see other resolutions, but I'd advise against trying to force the gpu to a higher resolution that's not supported. Good chance of killing the monitor that way.
