It fitted in my old P8Z68 Pro/Gen 3. 970 will not sit all the down in Hero Alpha VIII and does not align so I can scew it in.

It is probably the bottom of the 970 getting blocked by the case edge. Just get a screwdriver and push that bottom of the 970 in towards the motherboard as you push 970 downwards. Not easy to see because of all those extra decor covers ASUS has been putting on top of their motherboards.

That's what I am thinking. Thank you. I had a really hard time building my computer. I didn't sleep have been working on this build since 8PM. Motherboard wouldn't slide in at first (now it is. all screws are in place properly), couldn't hook up to internet. Had to figure I didn't have any drivers. What a hard night. This is my second build. I am using it with on board GPU.

Interesting. What GTX 970 and what case you using?

My Asus P8Z68 PRO/GEN 3, i3-2120 and GTX 970 SC FTW+ wasn't running new games very well (Doom, Killing Floor 2 etc.) so I learned I had to purchase a new motherboard to be able to use the 6600K. So I reused all parts except for MOBO and CPU. I purchased a new case because my Corsair 500R white is 4 years old. The new one is Corsair 760T.

The bottom-most tip of the bracket, the 'V', is probably being caught by the edge of the case. That's why the GPU cannot slot further down into the socket.

1. Keep the gpu as horizontally level as you can, as you position and align it over its socket.
2. The 'V' will get caught by the case edge.
3. Use a screwdriver and gently push this 'V' bottom edge of the bracket as you push down on the gpu. Once it clears the case edge, you are good to secure the whole gpu into its socket.

The above is what I usually do. Works all the time.

Is the "V" the bottom part of the GPU bracket, the part that is away from you as you install the GPU? Let me illiterate what you said. Basically I'm going to guide the "V" away from the obstacle that at the edge of the chassis, nearest to the motherboard?* Thanks for your advice.

Yes. I just had a look at my cards today. Not quite a V, more like a straightening and flattening at the bottom of the V :

...ignoring the dots and gap shown. When you look at it from the side, it is slightly curved outwards to the rear of case as you install. It is probably this slight curve that is hitting the case edge. But it is also likely this curve ensures a firm fit. You could try carefully straightening it slightly without damaging your gfx card. But I've found that pushing it with a screwdriver as I install is easier...no risk of damaging the gfx card.

I now believe it is the actually motherboard that is preventing the GPU from fully flushing on the left side. The Asus Hero VIII Alpha has a plastic cover that raises up on the left side. That is what's preventing the GPU from full installation.

If you believe the mobo is the cause, just loosen the screws on the mobo slightly, and adjust the position of the mobo to allow the gpu bracket to be lowered. It might be half mm or 1mm, but eventually the gap between case edge and mobo will enough for the gpu bracket to fit.

Don't forget to firm up the mobo screws after that.

Thank you. There are 9 screws but one of them is not a screw. It sits somewhere in the center of the motherboard (already implanted in the 760T chassis) and prevents the motherboard from moving any direction.

It's just covering some parts I assume. I don't think its screwed in. Probably glued. I'll find an image of it online to see. It does the plastic cover is screwed in from a photo from Asus webpage.

From the photo, it does appear to be screwed in. It was a pain in the butt to install the MOBO. The stem that is in the middle of the chassis (where the middle of MOBO lies in, not actual screw) was probably the problem. I was thinking that the padded IO shield might have been the problem why I couldn't just lay the MOBO down with ease as with my first build in 2012. It took me 2 hours to install the motherboard.

What is breadboard(ing)? I'm very sure that plastic part of the MOBO is the obstacle, almost sure. I can see that the GPU is making direct contact with it, hence the reason why the right part of the GPU is more deeply in then the left side by miles.

By building outside the case.
Yes the graphic card may touch the plastic but it should not cause a problem with installation.

Sorry to drag this old cow up from the depths again, but I wanted to ask; did you ever end up sorting this out?

I got a VIII Formula here thats refusing to eat its titan Xp, and im blaming the armor on the motherboard as well.

Was it this bit hitting the armor on your motherboard?

My issue had nothing to do with the armor plate on the motherboard (it only appeared to be the problem). Although it seemed the motherboard was correctly installed and screwed in, it wasn't. The MOBO has to be in a exact position with the chassis in order for the GPU to be completely flushed in. What I had to do was force the motherboard gently to the left after I had loosen the screws.
