Hi,

I've been thinking about upgrading my current GPU r9 280 for a while now. I've even created one thread at this forum before, asking about gpu upgrade, but decided to wait for a while.
I think now is the right time to upgrade my GPU.

With my budget I can get (~300 euros):

- RX 480 reference (~310 euros)
- EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC GAMING ACX 2.0+ (230 euros, limited time)
- Saphire r9 390 nitro (310 euros)

I'm wondering if 480 and 390 is worth extra 80 euros over 970? I could wait for 480 aib but I guess it wont be available for a while at my store, and it will be ~350 euros, so that's 120 more expensive than 970.

Should I invest more money and buy 480 because it has dx12 support? (future proof?) All I really want is a smooth ~60fps gaming at 1080p ultra (or near ultra) graphics.

Solution
The 1060 is supposed to be better than the 980 which if that holds true then it will not only be faster than the 480 but also use less power because its power draw is only 120 watts with a single 6 pin power connector

At the momment, 1070 costs ~520 euros at the shops I'm buying PC hardware from, so I guess it is safe to assume that 1060 will cost at least 350 euros if not more. It's a bit expensive and I'm really tired of waiting 😀 I just want to play games like witcher 3 without any lags.

The 480 still has trouble holding 60 fps at 1080p in the witcher. So again i would wait a week. July 19th is the release of the 1060. Founders edition is $299 and the msrp for partner cards like evga, msi, asus is $249 and its 6gb video ram

I guess I waited this long, few more weeks won't hurt. Then I will either buy 1060 or saphire nitro 480 (non-reference, 8pin)

1060 is going to be a solid choice! Though you will not be able to buy it for USA prices in Europe, so expect to pay 20-40% more.

Hi SingMeFear, at this moment the best course of action would be to wait for GTX 1060 release which is rumored to deliver performance in the range of GTX 980. Reviews will be out by 19th but availability is a different story and prices could shake up yet again - these are turbulent times! R9 390 might not be the best option here unless you get a great deal - it's larger memory bus will be under-utilized at 1080p and it's also more power hungry.

IMHO, you should not "invest more money" to get just one feature. DX12 support is fully available for the GTX 970, it's just that AMD GPUs are doing relatively better in current dx12 tittles (or Vulcan in case of 'Doom') - but the jury is still out. Rx 480 has 8gb V-RAM on-board which makes it a little more future proof depending on the games you play.

So wait if you can, if not then grab the best deal available. Regards.
