970 or 980 - My particular needs

So I'm still trying to figure out which card would serve me better especially considering the price difference between these cards. Obviously the 980 will future proof me more but is it worth the higher price. Below are some wants/needs, can you help me determine which would better suit me?

- I want to run 120-144hz @ 1080p monitor
- To achieve the above I'm ok with not Ultra and everything, but want to have things look nice (namely looking to play GTA 5 on high settings but need high fps @1080p for the 144hz monitor)
- Do not want to run 970 SLI

Another crappy thing is I have to purchase form best buy and their selection is lacking. With price matching online vendors prices aren't the issue but more so selection (the evga 980 has been out of stock for weeks...)

I would personally say that the 970 would be a better deal as the 980 at the minute is over priced for the performance that it gives

980 way overpriced. Nvidia's best price/performance card for high end gaming is the 970.
