Recently within the last few months I overhauled my PC by building a DDR4 build with the newest Intel I5, mobo, RAM, etc etc. The GPU I bought was EVGA GTX 970 FTW top of the end 970 I believe. However my issue is a few months after I bought this GPU specifically the new 10 series came out and I know they are awesome but I was wondering whether it is worth buying another EVGA GTX 970 FTW to go with my existing one (my mobo supports SLI) or investing in a 10 series card as I also plan on upgrading my monitor from 1080p to 1440p and would still like to run all future games within the next years or so at max. With my current setup I can run 90% of current games on max but with upcoming games and the prospect of also upgrading my monitor to 1440p I wasn't sure what the best from of action would be?

Beside MB, you need appropriate (i belive 750w or more) PSU and you need to deal with the heat output of 2 GPUs into your system.
that not to mention SLI/CF issues like: game is not supported, game not yet supported, game has stuttering/freezing and other performance issues including crashes when using multi GPU.
So since there are reasonably priced single cards that can easily handle 1440p gaming, there is no point to do SLI.
For your CPU, GTX 1070 is enough for 1440p monitor. you can run any game on highest settings with great FPS.

The downsides to SLI are power consumption, and lack of support. Some games do not play nice with SLI.

What is your power supply rated at?

For 1440p, I would suggest just getting a 1070.

Today we have 4GBVRAM SLI = 4GBVRAM gpu + 4GBVRAM gpu = 4GB + 4GB = 4GBVRAM.
DX12 would bring us the new SLI (4GB + 4GB = 8GBVRAM). But now we know that is not a sure thing.
For 1440p 4GBVRAM is not so good anymore. This will become increasingly worse in some years (months?).
Besides 970 is not so great with the 3.5VRAM thing.
1070 seems right now the perfect 1440p gpu w/ those 8GBVRAM.

The ones I see recommended the most are EVGA (but research the VRM heating issues), Gigabyte, MSI, and ASUS.

It really comes down to personal preference, and if you wish to overclock or not.

Bottom line getting a 1080 will stretch you further and longer before needing to upgrade again. The best option when buying a new gpu is to get the best single card you can afford that way if you need more power you can still opt to buy a second one and go sli.
