I returned my two 780ti cards and plan on purchasing two 970s or two 980s. Is there really any reason not to go with the 970 SLI setup at 2560x1440?

I was stuck in this dilemma. I decided to add both to my newegg auto notifications and whichever came in stock first was the one I was going to buy. If it was the 970 I was going to buy 2. A 980 came in stock first so I bought the Gigabyte G1 GTX 980. My plans are to get a ROG Swift and see how comfortable it is. If I want more I will buy another and run SLI along with a full water cooling loop. If it is smooth I will stick with 1 and air cooling for now. You sound like your in the same boat I am where budget isn't too big of a deal. I went with the GTX 980 and looking back I am glad I did. Yes the GTX 970 is better performance per dollar. But the GTX 980 is the fastest single GPU on the market.

For how long? December the 980ti will be available. I had no trouble deciding to go for the gtx 970 sli setup. I paid $50 more and have a huge performance difference. I figured when the 980ti is available, it will obviously out perform the 980 but the price will be a lot more. 970 sli still takes the cake. Imo, it's one of the best bang for buck cards that's ever come out the past decade, sure you can argue that but lets face it, at $350 you get a card that when overclocked, outperforms the 780ti and is half the cost.

For the price of one gtx 980, you're going to get a lot more performance out of sli 970's for a teeny tiny extra cost
