Hey guys. Since amds new series is out, wanted to know which one will be the better option. I can afford the 390x or the 970. Please keep in mind the price/performance ratio. If you favor the 390x, will it really be worth getting it over the 970?( i only plan to do 1080p gaming for now)

Nobody knows the answer. There are no benchmarks of the 390x yet so there is no answer. However I do believe the 390x will provide more performance as it's a newer card that pretty much beat's the GTX970 technically speaking.

My feeling is that the GTX 970 will hold it's own and be the better card. The R9 300 series are rumored, and leaked specs show, to be rebranded cards with HBM as Andrei123 shared...I did a lot of research when I built my new system and confident AMD is just not the way to go right now. Also, AMD cards require more power and put out much more heat.

Over the years I have swapped from AMD (ATI) to Nvidia and vis-versa. I just see Nvidia as the better card right now.

But this is just my PERSONAL PREFERENCE, I have nothing against AMD.

powers not an issue for me. Just wana know if the 390x will be worth it or not. I can always go for the 970 since its a great card.

First, that is only 1 game.

Second, the link YOU posted shows the 980 scoring the same or better except at 4K with 1 FPS less.

Third, overall it tied with the GTX 980 and fell several points below the GTX 980Ti.

Finally, yes the R9 390X might be a bit better than the 970...never said it wasn't. I said the GTX 970 will hold it's own and I still believe that. For AMD's NEW card, it hardly passes the GTX 970 which is already over 6 months old. So congrats to AMD for BARELY beating a 6 month old card with their newest release.

Again this is my PERSONAL PREFERENCE

Proof, AMD just rebranded the R9 2xx series with a bit more VRAM and up'd the memory clock speed...overall, the same cards!

Nope.

It's a renamed 290x with double the GDDR5. HBM is found on the Fury series not on the old cards.

The 390x is set to be quicker than a 970 (not by much) and also a LOT better at higher resolutions than 1080p. The 290x already was and this is essentially a quicker version of that.

What's really sad is that the 200 series of cards were a rebrand of the 7000 line of Radeon cards as well.
7850 = 265 = 370 and so forth:

In my country ( Belgium ) the r9 390x is 470€ while the 970 is around 350€ and for several extra FPS on the amd side it's not worth it . I wouldn't recommend it , and apparently it doesn't even have HBM, only the Fury X will , it's a good technology but since amd literally rebranded the 290x just a bit quicker it's not worth it not at all , I'd rather wait another year for Pascal which will have HBM and definitely will be faster than the r9 3xx series.

Tbh the 390x has better fps(5-15) in all the games guru3d benchmarked except the witcher 3 but if you guys say its not worth it(price/performance ratio included) then i'll probably go for the 970.

Thanks for sharing! I knew the GTX 970 would hold it's own!

The 390 is competitive with the 970 and much cheaper than the 390x, and still has 8GB. I personally think it's the best option in that price range.

Either that or wait for the R9 Nano.

I'm debating 390 or 970. To me it looks like performance is almost the same the 390 barely beating it in FPS, but the 970 runs coolr and uses less power, also don't more games use Nvidia physx and hairworks?
