I've seen a few questions related to this, but not exactly like my issue (I apologize if the answer is somewhere, I searched - i promise).

My build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Tp9qnn

So my Zotac 970 GTX starting to fail (one fan was starting to stutter) and so I placed an RMA with Zotac. 3 weeks later, they informed me the GPU was failing and they would send me a replacement. "Unfortunately" they no longer had my 970 so they'd be sending me a 980 GTX AMP! (listed in my parts) as a replacement, pretty happy about that!

Received the card yesterday. Uninstalled all drivers from my Win 10 install - used DDU (using the mobo graphics to run the system). Installed the 980 GTX in the same PCI-e slot as the 970, plugged in all the power, (2x6 pins), fans turned on, booted up - no display. Booted back with integrated graphics, checked bios (updated to latest), all set to the right PCI-e.

The graphics card will not display anything, and when checking the device manager, it doesn't appear. Instead it comes up as 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter". Nvidia doesnt detect an nvidia card so it won't install any drivers.

CPUz (and GPUz) both detect that it's an Nvidia card, but thats about it, no more data:

What could the problem be?

-I doubt the card is bad, it literally came straight from Zotac (im assuming refurbished). I've contact Zotac support about it

Could it be lack of power? From my researching my 650w should be just fine for what I have...the fans are spinning, but they were also spinning without the 6-pins connected...it also appears in device manager if I disconnect the 6-pins and boot the system.

What else could I be missing here?
I appreciate it!

Solution
I don't know, i would be looking a 2nd opinion at this point and perhaps get PC looked at by repair store as they can test to see if GPU works on another PC before returning it, as it could be something else at this point. Save waiting 3 weeks for nothing.

I appreciate the response. Unfortunately nvidia won't let me install drivers since it says 'no nvidia component connected to this computer'.

Drivers have been uninstalled using DDU and all nvidia software removed, currently using integrated graphics directly from motherboard because display won't turn on when connected directly to gpu.

The fans spin with no 6 pins attached as they are powered through the PCI connection, the extra 2 cables are needed to power the actual card.

Can you check if GPU works in another PC?

650watt should be enough for what you are running, but you might want to check power consumption with the card attached, as PSU itself might not be supplying what is advertised on box. Fact Screens won't show if you have them attached to GPU also points at it being a power thing.

Your PSU only has 2 6 pin connectors, its an old model from 2011. Most newer PSU have more than 2

I appreciate it, I'm going to try to get a new PSU from frys down the road and text it to see if it's a power thing. I unfortunately don't have easy access to another System to rest or another gpu laying around.

The fact the symptoms are exactly the same with the power pins connected or not making me think it's a power thing, I've rebooted and reseated it multiple times on different pci e slots too, that sucker is in there.

Yeah, same symptoms, appears in device manager the same. No drivers can be installed, display doesn't work directly from gpu.

Yeah, updated Bios and Windows.

Update: So I went out and got a new PSU to test out, since Fry's has a pretty nice return policy. Connected everything up - nothing. Same exact problem. I'm thinking the card came from Zotac dead, not sure what else to try at this point but RMA it AGAIN (took 3.5 weeks last time).
