980 Strix Not being recognized by windows

I just installed a 980 strix and I have a display plugged in and working but nvidia drivers will not install and directx wont run windows says that there is a standard vga graphics adapter installed. has anyone expierenced this before? Also I just upgraded from a 660

Do you get an error message when trying to install the drivers?
Make sure you have enough power going to the GPU, often the power cables don't get fully seated.
That card needs a 6-Pin & an 8-Pin power cable, make they come from two different leads.
