That's the most idiotic advice anyone can give. Playing the waiting game makes 0 sense as there will ALWAYS be something faster than what you have coming out later, or the same level of performance for much cheaper. You're almost always better off just getting the best you can afford at the time that you can afford it.

OP, you just need to make sure that the games you play most/are planning to play support SLi well enough, and if so, go SLI 980s as that will provide the most performance. However, if you are someone who prefers being able to run games at highest IQ settings (rather than highest possible FPS), you might want to get a 980Ti now and double up later as many new games can use 4+GB of vram at 2560x1440.

the reason i give this advice is because he already has a gtx 980 and that will be good for another few years, he already has a high end setup. Im just saying if i were him (and i do have an overclocked gtx 970) then i would not upgrade immediately as his gpu is really good right now. Dont be a jerk.

upgrading every few years to a decent gpu is way more cost effective and you are only a bit behind on performance. For example, if i upgraded to the newest 300$ gpu every 3 years that would be 3000$ in 30 years, and the whole time i would only be maybe a year or two behind the best gpu performance. If i got the newest 600$ gpu every 3 years then i would have spent 6000$ in 30 years. If i upgraded a year after release to 2 980s intead of 1, and i upgraded like this often then i would have spent a whole lot. you also save on power by buying cheaper.

Im not saying what he should or should not do, it is his money and if i was rich then i would probably do the same. I just said what i would do.
