hi i have 2 980 ti in my rig right now i was wondering if i should sell them before they drop in price and buy 1 1080 or run sli in 1080 or should i just stick with my 980 ti's? not sure what to do. Is the performance a really big jump from the 980 ti to 1080? if it is not than i dont think im going to upgrade

Solution
I have already sold my 980ti even before the announcement of the 1080 on the 6th of May. My main reason was the immediate anticipation of drop of price. At the time I still managed to bag over 800 USD for my 980ti G1 as in my country import etc pushes the price up substantially. Therefore the loss is somewhat amplified here. Since the announcement the price has dropped to below 700 here and is sliding. Both Nvidia and AMD is claming to have a 980ti category card in the 370$ region in the near future.

I personally do think that you should sell your 980ti SLI to mitigate financial loss. The 1080 will be a much better card. I do not believe these leaked benchmarks for the most part purely because the 1080 has a 60.7% improvement on clock...
when "they" say that 1080 will be as fast as 2x 980 in sli they mean with the VR extra stuff, AND those are normal 980 not 980ti etc. AND thats probably exaggerated.
In the leaked 3dmark scores my 980ti 6GB about ties and in some cases beats the 1080, either way it's close. My 980ti is a beast with a huge factory overclock but still, the fact that it's close to me says this:
Unless you have an amazing buyer and can sell your 980s for a great price (like close to break even)
OR
You're finding yourself getting even close to subpar framerates in whatever you're doing
OR
you've got tons of money and just want to be able to say you've got the newest stuff

There is no point to put ~$1200 into a new platform which will not be leaps and bounds better than what you've already got.

I guess the new games will be another factor but it will be quite some time until your system is pushed as it is and by then these things will be cheaper or you can skip a generation which is what I'm going to do. (unless something weird happens and games just start becoming too hard to run but I don't see that happening)

hey man thx for replying ya i definitely don't have a lot of money i blew it all building the rig i have rn lol. just 1 of my friends said that the price for the 980 ti is going to drop because of the new card cause its way better. i was certain that he was exaggerating cause in the info they released its only compared to a 980 and they claim that its about twice as fast but its really only 1.6-1.7 times as fast. plus the seem to really be focussing in the extra vr power and less power consumption and thats it. and there is no way anyone was going to get used cards for full price so i was thinking if it was worth of taking the loss of selling the cards for a cheaper price and just getting the new cards. lol thx man it has been a constant thought for me the last few days i can finally calm down.

First off getting one card to do the work is normally more efficient and less buggy at least when it comes to most games.
Performance wise, 980ti in SLI is great and will be a great system for a long time to come. The thing is the new 1080 is more efficient when it come to power consumption and that also normally means its cooler too. So if you wanted a cooler, quieter system then start looking to upgrade. (possibly)

You can compare FPS but realistically at some point you'll find you limited by your monitor or some other component before the difference in cards is an issue.

If you were a couple of generations of card behind then you would probably want to upgrade for performance reasons. I am in that group at the moment.

The interesting thing would be to see how two 1070's in SLI compare to one 1080. With the available specs it should be 33% better on paper but will it bench that way?

Anyways that is my advice, to each person it is a bit different. I have a spare 660 to use while waiting for the 1080. Perhaps sell one of the 980tis now and get rid of the other one later.

oh k thx didnt know they were going to drop that much. ya i might just sell them then thx.

I really feel like the money will be wasted.
like he said we all have our own opinion and that's fine but there is no way the real world bench is going to be even 70% faster in normal games. Especially not at typical resolutions.
One benchmark I read even showed that the 980ti is MUCH FASTER clock for clock.

Is it a better card sure it is but it is not something you need at all and I feel like you will lose value if you upgrade.

man im getting so many opinions lol. its why i turned to this forum :). i think im just going to w8 until a 3rd party releases some benchmarks and go from there. if the performance justifies they price i will make the switch. If not i simply wont. idc really about vr and other shit like that. i just want the new battlefield too look sooooo beautiful that i have a seizure in my seat and die of happiness. thanks

you will need to wait for benchmarks to know for sure, you have so many people who comment still thinking the card is 2x the performance of the titan x and convince others to think the same thing.

XD there is no way that the card is 2x times faster than the titanx and the titan still has more vram. they compare the card to the 980 and say it was 2x faster but that wasn't even true. the card is around 1.6-1.7x faster than a 980. thats why im going to just w8 for a 3rd party benchmark. way too much mis-information going around.

pretty much, however keep in mind that 8gb's of vram is more than enough, same as going from 8gb of gddr5 and 8gb of gddr5x wont make a big performance increase alone

oh ik that 8gb is enough and it will be a while before any game can even utilize the 12gb on the titan x . thats why im leaning more toward just keeping my 980ti's just have to 100% convinced by the benchmarks now.
