9800 or 9700 PRO?

Right. There are a few subtle differences, which may offer increased performance in certain situations. If the prices are the same, go 9800.

ive tried both.

Same core design, just that the R9800pro runs faster.

R9700pro runs at 325Mhz core, 310Mhz mem.
R9800pro runs at 380Mhz core, 340Mhz mem.

The core has also had some optimisation tweaks done, so even if you clocked a R9800pro to R9700pro speeds some games will still be slightly faster.

Obviously the R9800pro gives better performance, but the R9700pro or nonpro will give performance levels only a little slower, but at a MUCH more affordable price. Better bang per buck.

I think he means 9800 nonpro, which is essentially a 9800pro at 9700 pro speeds

ok well i have got a 9800np unfortunatly i got the one with slower inspiron memory which emans i cant flash it to pro speeds, if u can get a 9800np with crucial ram at 2.8ns go for it even if you dont want to oc it. The diffs between 9700p and 9800np is that 9700 has higher core i think it is which shows up in benchmarks cus the 9700pro always comes above the 9800np. however i think the 9800np will be better in future dx9 games due to having better z buffers and a few more improved things over the 9700pro. Its pretty much the same card really its ati's way of getting rid of the 9700pro, like they did with the 9500 pro and 9600pro.

Even with "Inferioron" memory, you still have a nice card. I had one of those. Blows away the 9500 Pro's and 9600XT's, which are great cards also. I too was bummed I didn't get hynix or samsung mem and be able to flash it to a PRO, but it still gave great fps and could be OC'd a little.

ye im not saying it is a bad card i love my card and wouldnt trade it for anything...well theres always the 9800xt or the soon to be ati 420 if neones interested in a trade lol. The thing about these cards is that they are so damn good value for money because imo the 9600 series dont cut the grade. On either the 9700pro (a 2 year old card) or 9800np you will never have problems with frame rates. The best news is that both the prices have gone down due to the xt coming out and if neone wants one and dotn mind waiting a couple of months they will be even cheaper. id be happy with ne card. I have heard of problems with the connector of the 9700p though cus its like the floppy drive connector where as the 9800np is a normal one.

I believe that both cores are 325 Mhz, but the 9700 PRO memory is clocked at 310, while the 9800 non-pro memory is clocked at 290.

So chances are the 9700 PRO memory is rated higher. I'd go with the PRO.

9700P's do have faster ram(something I wish my 9800 had), but I dont think a 9700P can run it's core at 420Mhz, something my card did right out of the box.

Hmmm... good point. I'd be interested in seeing which would give better performance: a 9700 PRO with less of an OC on the core and a higher mem OC, or a 9800... with a high OC on the core and a small OC on the mem.

Out of the box though, I think the 9700 PRO is a tad faster. I haven't yet seen a banchmark that shows significant improvements of the 9800 over the 9700 architecture. At the same clockspeeds the things are basically identical.
Most of the changes were marketingspeak to justify calling the 9700 something else, so they could charge more for it... maybe future titles will show a difference, we'll see I guess.

Straight out of the box, a 9700pro should beat a 9800std, overclocked I believe the 9800 goes faster but not by much... the 9700 pro has got better memory, the 9800 core will go higher & has optimisations the 9700 hasnt got...

All in all, get the cheaper 'cause unless U count every FPS it's unlikely U will notice the difference...
