well, my computer manufacturer (Sony vaio) says just to remove old card (TNT2) and plug the new one in (9800 pro). Think this is safe as I've heard a rumour aobut nvidia drivers messing with the ATI drivers.

btw I got the bulk version of the card so it doesn't have any instructions to help me.

*excuse my computer illiteracy =) but I just wanted to check with you guys

btw my computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX560 in case that matters. Thanks

Here are some steps to make the installation hassle free.

1) Uninstall your current card using Control Panel->Add/Remove Hardware
2) Use <A HREF="http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/" target="_new">Driver Cleaner 2</A> to remove any leftover nVidia files.
3) Use <A HREF="http://download.guru3d.com/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=582" target="_new">Nasty File Remover</A> to remove even more unwanted files.
4) Use <A HREF="http://content.guru3d.com/index.php?page=detonatorrip&menu=0" target="_new">Detonator RIP</A> to do a clean-up of leftover files.
5) Run a registry cleaning program, such as <A HREF="http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048" target="_new">RegScrubXP</A> (Win2K or XP) or <A HREF="http://www.acelogix.com/" target="_new">Ace Utilities</A> to clean up any left over registry entries.
6) Remove old card and install new card.
7) Install new drivers and re-boot.

I know it sounds like a lot of work, but trust me, its worth it, and it only takes a couple extra minutes. Lots of people have no end of problems when changing from an nVidia card to ATI simply because they don't uninstall the drivers properly. I did the same procedure a week ago when I upgraded from a GF3 Ti200 to a Radeon 9600XT, and haven't had a single issue.

Spec:
Intel P4 2.4B
MSI 645E Max-U Mobo
512MB DDR333
ATI Radeon 9600XT 128MB
SB Live 5.1
WD 60GB
Maxtor 120GB
LG 12x8x32 CDR
WIN2K PRO SP4

1) Uninstall your current card using Control Panel->Add/Remove Hardware

If I do this won't my comp have to restart and it won't be able to display anything? (so don't use the add/remove programs thing like the manual suggests first)

First off, what OS are you using? I know with 2000, I can select to not restart right now.

If you can, restart later. Then run the other programs as suggested, then shut down, install new crad, reboot, and install new drivers.

I'm running xp

btw did you have to worry about the power supply going to your card? I'm going to hook it up like it says in the manual says it needs at least 300 watt

btw something is wrong with the Detonator RIP download. When I try to extract it doesn't work... is this an essential prog? (I'm not sure if I even have the nvidia detonator drivers, using a really old driver version)

You may be OK not using Detonator RIP. The others do a really good job.

As fas as power supply goes, what do you have in your computer right now? It should say on a label on the side of the PSU. I didn't have to worry as the 9600XT doesn't need external power.

If you don't have a GOOD quality 300W PSU,you will likely have to upgrade that as well.

BTW, Sony MAY use a properiatary power supply, meaning if it isn't big enough, you need to get a new one from Sony. Check into this before you install your new card.

how would I find out if I have a GOOD quality PSU

also I'm assuming you booted in safe mode and THEN uninstalled nvidia drivers via add/remove program... then proceeded to use all those programs to make sure everything is removed...
