I have just RMA'd my 9500 pro to Connect3d so, all being well, they should soon be sending me a new 9600 pro. However, i have been following the whole softmodding 9800 SEs to 9800 pros thing and i have found somewhere in the UK where i can get an AIW 9800 SE with the L-shaped memory (i.e.256bit memory bus) for £144.
If i do get sent a 9600 pro, do you think it would be worth selling it on ebay and buying one of these 9800 SEs and unlocking the extra four pipelines?I know the success of unlocking the other pipelines cannot be guaranteed but a lot of people seem to have done it without issue.Has anyone here done so?

no matter how hard you try, you can't polish a turd. :]

You have to make sure the 9800se is exactly identical to the company's 9700 cards. Then it could be modded. Even then the success rate isn't too high, so if i were you i'd get a 9600pro, overclock it to 525/350 or higher, and keep it.

The card i am looking at is here.Someone on rage3d has bought two of these and modded them successfully.I was originally intending to keep the 9600 pro (if and when they send me one!) and change the hs and oc as far as possible, but i am tempted by the fact that for about £30 extra layout i could get a 256bit memory bus and possibly/probably 4 more pipelines. There is a looong thread on rage3d about the 9800se and a lot of people are searching for these L-shaped memory versions.
I really don't know what i should do  .

There have been polls done at Rage3d.com, and the success rate of a mod is almost exactly 50%.

That's a pretty high failure rate, so buyer beware.

Radeon 9500 (hardmodded to PRO, o/c to 322/322)
AMD AthlonXP 2400+ (o/c to 2600+ with 143 fsb)

Great! Here's hoping then!I suppose i will be very likely to keep the 9600 pro if i get one- Connect3d are being very quiet-unless i get some crappy infineon or something.

Actually Sapphire has memory modules ranging from the 2.86ns Samsung (and the lesser 2.86ns EntronTech which doesn't overclock so well.) to the 3.3ns Samsung. Only the Fireblade is guaranteed to have the 2.86 ns Samsung.

The Connect 3D boards I have seen reviewed have the Hynix 2.8ns (not 2.86) memory which actually was reaching lower overclock levels than the Samsung 2.86ns memory.

Just a heads up.

And the R9800SE moding at 50% even seems high to me. From what I've seen the mod seems to take LESS than 40% of the time, more like 30 something.

Anywhoo, that's just my experience.

If you wanna read an article on the R9800SE's performance moded and not, take a look at this OC NZ review.
