Well, my old GF4 Ti 4400 isn't gonna cut it in DX9 games. So i'm out to buy a new card for my new P4 system. I already spent most of my money on my guts of the comp, Asus P4C800 Deluxe, 512 Corsair Twinx DDR400, P4 2.6C, so i only have about $200 to spend on a new High End vid card. I know the 9800 is slower than the 9800 Pro(reduced clock speeds, probably won't oc as high either). I think that it's pretty close to the Pro's performance level, maybe inbetween the 9700 Pro and the 9800 Pro. But i'm not sure. If anybody has any use full info on this card(ATI reference card aka "Built By ATI") please let me know. Oh i'm switching to ATi becase of Nvidia's poor performance in HL2 and ATI is cheaper and run's pretty close to as fast as FX 5900 does in almost all the games. LOL.

Its possible for the 9800 to be turned into a 9800 Pro by flashing the bios. I'll link to instructions when I find them, but keep in mind that it doesn't always work. I believe you need Samsung memory at 2.8 or 3.3 ns.

I am no expert, someone else would probably be able to expand on this.

You need Samsung @2.8ns like on the Pro in order to be sure it will work @380Mhz core 340Mhz memory.
The non Pro default is 325Mhz core 290Mhz memory and it ships with either 3.2 or 3.0ns Infeneon DDR SGRAM(some early ones had the 2.8ns Samsung but don't count on finding one).
Now the core will most likely easily clock at 380 or more but the memory??
I have the 3.0ns Infeneon and 327Mhz is the most I can get with no artifacts out of my memory eventhough 3.0ns should run @333Mhz.

so to get things straight 9800 has the same pipelines and shaders as pro but slower memory therefore lower clock speeds.
is that true for all pro vs non pro cards?

yes, I believe the pro version of a card is a higher clocked version of the regular. they share the same architecture and design.

also, I would look into the Radeon 9500 non pro. I've heard its possible to get an incredible speed increase on that, by modding it to a 9700 and overclocking. Its only $128.

The nonPro by default has both lower GPU and memory settings. However the GPU is the same and so you should be able to run the GPU at the same speeds(ATI branded cards).
As for the memory I hate to tell you, overclocking either Pro or nonPro much past the default is unlikekly.

is it just a simple bios flash to change it to 9700... if so that would be cool.... would the update be just getting a 9700 bios and flashing it on the 9500?... or is it a hacked one?

The card has to be hacked in order to use the 9700 BIOS. There is a soft mod that's much easier to perform.

You have to hack the driver, but its all software so its not difficult, and can be reversed.

People used to hardmod 9500s to 9700s, but if it didn't work, you were [-peep-].

i just checked the overclocked forums and its seems that the clock speed is not the only difference.... non pros have 4 pipelines while pros have 8... which i think is very relevant.

my mistake. I should know this, as I am looking right at 9500 specs. But both the 9800 and the 9800 pro have 8 pipelines. If I am not mistaken, it is the 9800 SE that has the 4 pipelines.

first off not all 9800 np's come with Infeneon ram. My 9800 np came with Samsung 3.3ns ram. I Purchased mine off newegg (sapphire brand) and overclocked it to 9800 pro speeds when i recieved it. I flashed it the next day and haven't looked back since. Most of the time the Samsung ram will flash to 9800 pro speeds but please check before doing so. Also if you do go for a brand i suggest BB ATi or Sapphire, since they tend to have the Samsung ram. GL with the card. And the performance differnece is usually less than 10 fps.
