Hey, before when I used the older version of drivers this problem never occurred to me. When ever I play Counter-Strike 1.6/Source or an old game Jedi Knight 2, I get errors, such as, Toucan IPC: hl.exe - Application Error and below in the box it says something like this, The instruction at "0x69709250" referenced memory at "0x01020654". The memory could not be "read". I don't know if my graphics card gone bad or its just the drivers aren't good. Also notice that all three games that I stated above are OpenGL.
Could it be my RAMs that are the problem behind this? Please help.

The thing is it's only doing this with old games, like if I play Call of Duty 4 which I think is OpenGL as well it doesn't give me this error. Also, I found other people with the same problem with no overclock at all. I don't get this error in Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Halo, F.E.A.R, Unreal Tournament 2004, or Crysis. Its only those three games above that I mentioned it does that on. So I'm guessing it is those three games that are having problems with the driver. As I mentioned it only happened when I installed drivers 177.79, I never had any problems before using the older versions of drivers for the graphics card.

Just thought I bring this topic back up because I am having exactly the same problem. After the new set of nvidia drivers, hl.exe is giving me this problem (ironically enough) AFTER i close counter-strike.

No overclocks, all stock.
EVGA 8800GTS

Considering that the OP had a 9800GTX, its most likely a driver problem.

Hi. Yeah I'm having a similar problem to this but it's not with a game. It's with a 3D modeling program called Maya 6 and whenever I try to open a file in it I get the following error message and then Maya crashes:

Fatal Error. Attempting to save in C:/DOCUME~1/Chris/LOCALS~1/Temp/Chris.20081022.1117.ma

Any ideas?

I'm using the Geforce 9800GTX with 178.13 drivers.
This is a new problem and I have been able to run Maya without any problems for months on this present hardware setup. So it can only be Software. I did install SP3 for XP so that I could play Brothers in Arms hell's highway (could that be the problem?)

Any help I would be very thankfull for.

yeah i got the 178.13 drivers and had my gpu overclocked with atitool... since i put it to load at startup, after the driver was installed, it **** up every time and i couldn't like stop it loading cos it auto loaded... had to go in safe mode and delete atitool 🙁 use riva overclocking fine now though :)

BTW new 178.28 or something drivers are out now :)
