980ti + 1080 in the same rig,Is it possible?

So I have a
EVGA GTX 980ti acx 2.0
I want to upgrade to a GTX 1080 or 1070 but was wondering if It Will be possible to SLI the two cards. Or do I just sell the 980ti. Will direct x 12 help. I game but I also do VFX and render a lot, GPU rendering and CPU. Thanks guys.

If you can manage to wait to start of next year when both Nvidia and AMD release their real top cards I'd wait until then before making any decision with your current card. But if you have the cash burning your pockets and want a upgrade now get the GTX 1080, 1070 would be more like a sidestep from your current card (possible gains in VR not withstanding if you have/plan getting the equipment).
DirectX 12 makes it possible to run two different graphics cards like sli/cf, but this requires that the game supports this (I wouldn't count on too many games supporting this in near future). Check out the performance difference, you have very close to the performance of a GTX 1070 at stock speeds with the 980 TI. And you can propably OC that 980 TI quite a bit aswell. You might want to consider waiting a bit for the GTX 1080 TI or AMD Vega before upgrading, what resolution are you gaming at?
