My 980ti mananges to jump from 6gb to 12gb in a matter of seconds after booting up Skyrim, and Fortnite. Doesn't seem to happen in Heaven Benchmark though.

Once it reaches 12gb vram usage, the system locks up.

Anybody have any idea what's happening?

The Vram and System RAM are labeled differently, I'm definitely not confusing the two.

Core i3 10100f
MSI B460M-A PRO
2x4 GB G.Skill 2400MHz RAM
Antec VP600P PSU
EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrid
WD Green 240GB 2.5" SSD

I have read that when your gpu runs out of VRAM it can use RAM instead. I don't know if it's enabled by default or you have to do it yourself but I do know that it greatly affects performance, to the worst of course. You only have 8GB of RAM after all which is already bad for gaming.

Maybe that's what's happening here. On another note, your PSU is not meant to be used with a gaming rig. You are pushing it to it's limits and it's a matter of when and not if, it fails. You should consider buying a better and higher quality PSU, unless you want to gamble a component of your system be taken out from it.
