9950 VOLTAGE AND MULTIPLIER SETTINGS

Hello

Im struggling overclocking my machine which is as follows:

9950 BE 140W version
asus M3A78 Motherboard

4gb of ddr2 memory. trp 6 clock, trrd 3 clock, trcd 6 clock, tras 18 clock, twr 6 clock, twtr 3 clock, trtp 3 clock, trc 24 clock, td 6 clock

600w ocz stealth psu
Radeon 4870 512m
various case fans and blowers....

I cant get a stable overclock over 2.8ghz using AMD Overdrive. I havnt messed about with memory or anything like that merely adjusted the cpu voltage (currently running at 1.25v) withe the multiplier at 14x. Im not sure what the best thing to do with the ram timings are etc etc or where to go from here.

Im getting just over 2.8ghz but want close to 3!

15.5x at 1.4votls. Use bios not overdrive.

That would run the chip at 3.1ghz wouldnt it? ive only got a stock cooler..... aiming for 2.9 to 3..

yes 15.5x is 3.1 ghz. I have the phenom 9950 140watt as well. With a after market heatsink 1.45 volts is fine, but on the stock cooler your right it will get to hot an BSOD. When I first started out i found that 3.0 ghz at 1.38 volts was stable. Does your mobo have the sb750? If so make sure the ACC is set to auto. I have the MSI K9A2 board with the sb600, so it harder to overclock with the pheonom I's. I max out at 3.15 ghz.

Listen I managed to get mine to 3.3 ghz on a Cooler Master V-8. Give it a little voltage, say to 1.4V and increase the multi to 15. Also are you using ACC, if not turn it on to Auto which seems to get the best performance. The 140 W seems to run out of steam at 3.4 Ghz. The best way to overclock the system is one thing at a time. Work with the processor first, then work on the ram. The ram setting should be your least worry as you will see the least gain from those settings. BTW no it wont explode, I ran mine up to 1.65V and it didnt explode.

Ive got the asus M3A78 Mobo which has the RD770 Chip onboard.
Is that any good?? I cant find ACC anywhere on AMD overdrive???
Ive tried raising the multiplier to 15x and boosted the voltage right up to 1.4. On overdrive it stays stable for a while keeping around 60 degrees but then fails on the calculations tests....

The only rock solid overclock i have had so fat is at 1.25v 14x giving me just over 2.8ghz! HELP!!!

The ACC is on overdrive but isnt highlighted and cant be accessed. Shall i run the auto clock function??? or is that too unstable?

I did some searching, and I think you have the sb700. Meaning no acc. 60c is way to hot for any cpu. That is why your crashing. What you should do is return everything to stock settings, and stress the cpu at 100% for an hour. If the cpu gets to hot say 55c at stock settings your stock heatsink is not going to cut it for any overclock. From there you have three choices. Improve case air. Buy an after market heatsink. Replace thermal paste with artic silver5.

There is nothing wrong with your board. The difference between the 770, 780g, 790gx, and the 790fx is crossfire options an onboard video.

I have improved airflow etc etc but i think the problem lies with memory?

I had run the cpu at 2.8ghz and it ran stable even at high temps ie 65.

With that being the case i got a load of large fans and under full load its down to 55 over an hour or so so i dont think its a heat issue. oc'ed up to 2.9ghz using the bios settings and AMDO it keeps crashing even after tiny incrementals from 14x @ 1.25v. It wont run 14.5x at 1.4v+.....

very strange! I thought it would have done........

Im stuck running at 2.8ghz with the chip oc'ed at 14x with voltage at 1.25v.

The NB Speed is on 202. If i raise that up to 207 it crashes!

I only use amd overdrive for fine tuning. like pci express bus, ht link, or voltage settings. I don't recommend bus speed changes, or multiplier changes.

Is your memory set to auto timings? What is your memory voltage?

Do you know what your timings should be? What speed are you running your ram? Example 800, or 1066. A model number, brand, or a link would also be helpful.

I have no idea what kind settings it should be set to other than whats listed above. Its 800mhz ddr2 ram...

I got the feeling you got some cheapo ram. The ram shouldn't hurt the cpu multiplier being raised though. If you want a higher overclock i recommend you getting a aftermarket cooler. You can get a good one for 30 bucks.

I had the same problem. With my 9950 BE. My Mobo has the SB700 chipset (so no ACC). At stock voltage and FSB, I couldn't get higher than about 2.8 ghz (200x14). I began experimenting with the FSB, and found with a slight voltage bump (1.365v I believe) I could get to 225x14 for a total of 3.15Ghz, and it runs stable at 50 degrees under load with a middle of the road air cooler. I was able to run a stress test at 3.2, but the temps started getting out of hand. If I had known the difference between the SB700 and SB750 when I built this system in November, I would have chosen a different motherboard, but even without it, the 3Ghz barrier was easily breakable.

You guys have really helped me out! Will stick with this chip for a while i reckon and then then get a phenom 2 940 3.0ghz when the prices come down a bit.

More overclocking headroom plus have more cache methinks

would 1.400v be recommended for the 125w version of the 9950be (what i have) i have been struggling with crashes as well...i dont want to go past 3ghz so x15 multiplier is kind of where i want to be. im afraid of raising my voltage to much. system specs are as follows:

phenom 9950 125w version
HD 4870 gpu
ocz fatal1ty 2x2gb 800mhz ram
antec 650w psu
xigmatek S1283 HS/fan
antec 1200 case

Hello mate

Ive managed to get 2.93ghz out of it! If you change the ht speed to 200 instead of the default 202 or 201 you are able to get the multiplier boost! Am happy with that!! Ive got some extra larger fans in my case which has reduced temps by 10 degrees...

the stock heatsink base was warped brand new right out of the box.
had the base lapped, sanded flat, and have no problems now.

9950 140w w/stock fan/sink oc'd to 15x 3000mhz + 1.38v. running stable with cpu + gpu 24/7 @100%.

running at 60c full power.
