Make sure no peer to peer programs are loaded in the background and no
downloads/uploads are in progress and the netspeed of the game is set to
"2600" (hit F6 mid-game to see your netspeed and other connection stats).

I should have mentioned that he is using UT 2004. I have seen a place to
change your connection to "modem" and "dynamic net speed". but no place to
set the net speed.

A bad ping is one thing but a steady 999 ping would seem to indicate another
problem but I can't think of anything else I should do.

It was a mail program that my sister was using. Your suggestions were what
it took to remind me to have them unload those programs. Thanks

The ping is now around 230. My guess is that the only way to make this any
better is to get a different ISP. The one they are using now is ATT.

Or dump the modem and get broadband...

You ever think there are areas that don't provide broadband?

Top posting, it's my right and I am keeping it.

Sure, but they are getting fewer and further between, ask around and
you might be pleasantly surprised.

[Oh, and keep top-posting, and never mind the trimming thing, that's
just for folks who want to be polite.]

No, I never think that.

Yeah, no problem there, "JC". Don't care one way or the other, at least
with you.
