Playing No Man's Sky a lot recently and noticed that my i5 4690k (non OC) was hitting temps of 99 degrees Celsius using the stock heat sink, how will this impact my pcs performance over time? do I need to upgrade my heatsink?

Yeah, that's way too hot, check to make sure your heatsink is mounted properly, it shouldn't be loose or wiggle at all, if it is, get some thermal paste, clean it up and remount the heatsink. The stock cooler should be adequate for stock speeds unless you're running your system in a very hot environment.

Thanks for the helpful response, remounted heatsink and re-positioned a case fan nearer to the CPU & motherboard, temperatures are now only getting up to 60-70 max.
