[SOLVED] 9th gen Intel Bad Choice?

So both 3600 and 9700 are available in my local shop. 9700 is like $30 expensive. Is it that bad? Especially with 2 extra cores? Don't want to spend for a Z series board.

9700 is a CPU sized oven. I would bet on 3600X and AMD B550 motherboard with good VRM around 150$ price range. Then you can easy move to 5600X and above CPU later.

Thanks. Unfortunately B550 is bit out of my budget. (Or maybe they are overpriced due to shortage) You think B450 is a waste?

No. Technically all B450 works also with Zen3 CPUs after BIOS update and the single drawback is only PCIe 3.0 support for GPU and NVMe drives and lack of internal connector for front panel USB-C connector. However for AM4 socket 4xx chipset boards I would recommend to get good B450 or X470 motherboard - with adequate VRM and capable to run overclocked RAM profiles at least up to 3200 MHz. or better - 3600 MHz. Like these:

Asrock B450 Pro4
Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE V2
Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming

Because game loading so far does not benefit much from PCIe 4.0 support, you will be fine with B450 or X470 for few years ahead.

Thanks. AORUS ELITE V2 is available and tiny bit expensive than the MSI gaming plus max. But I'll go with the Gigabyte. It also looks much better.

If you run multithreaded batch apps, then the extra 4 threads can be useful.
Or, if you play multiplayer games with many participants.

OTOH, the faster single thread performance of the 9700 will be beneficial to most games.
Since the 9700 is not overclockable, there is not much value in a more expensive Z motherboard.
Here are the passmark ratings:
r5-3600 12 threads total rating 17866, single thread 2585
I7-9700 8 threads total 13535, single thread 2807.

I might add that ryzen needs fast ram for best performance. Think 3600 speed.
Ram compatibility is flaky, check that whatever you buy is supported by the motherboard.

Intel is not ram speed sensitive nor are there compatibility issues.

Then go for 3200 MHz CL14. modules.

Also you can look into "shortcut" RAM modules for budget builds. Like Patriot Viper 4 Series DDR4-3733, CL17-19-19-39, PV416G373C7K. Both my nephews use 16 GB kits of these in XMP configuration for 3733-CL17 - no problems at all. Speed difference with 3600 CL16 is very negligible, cost around 97 EUR in my country.
