A 1440p 60hz monitor or a 1080p 144hz one ?

So I'm planning on buying a new monitor since I have just recently bought a gtx 1070 and I was wondering what option should be the best for me (for ultra settings AAA new games )
Specs :
i7 8700K 3.70ghz (Not OC'ed - goes between 4.2-4.6ghz)
Asus Geforce GTX 1070 Rog Strix 8GB OC Mode
hyperX 2x8GB DDR4 (1860 mhz)
GigaByte B360 HD3
My preference is always frames per second than resolution so i need your help in diciding what kind of a monitor to buy (Not gonna bother with a 1440p 144hz monitor because I know my graphics card is not sufficient for that

If by suffer you mean you will have to lower the settings. then yes. That's going to happen with either option. If you want to play at high details for longer, you need a stronger GPU, like the 1070 Ti(which isn't much more expensive than the 1070, usually, but can easily beat it in performance).

In current demanding games, you can get 60 FPS at high details, not ultra. In games that come out 2 or 3 years later, you'll have to turn it down further, perhaps medium or even low, although seeing the new RTX lineup's performance improvement over the 10-series makes it unlikely that game devs will increase system requirements too much until Nvidia offers more affordable performance boosts(that was a long sentence, damn).

Either way, you will have to upgrade the GPU in the near future, the 1070 isn't very far ahead for 1080p 144 Hz either.

For games like RDR2 (yes, I am still waiting for this to come), Witcher 3, Dragon Quest XI, Skyrim, etc.
Having higher resolution but only 60Hz is the way to go.

For CS:GO, BF1, Fortnite, PUBG, etc. 144Hz is the way to go.


GTX1070 for 1440p 60FPS goal is good, you just can not max everything on new AAA games.
GTX1070 is more for 1080p 144FPS goal.

difficult to decide....I prefer to not touch anything in the graphic settings and play everything "calmly and stable "
so 1080p 144hz is the way to go ? (And yeah - i'm hyped for games like RDR2 Cyberpunk 2077 dying light 2........
and by 144hz i don't mean to say all games at 144hz stable locked just above 60 fps to the point that I will notice a difference like 100fps)

Now about getting an 1440p 144hz monitor.
You can use simply any GPUs for 1440p 144Hz.
144hz means that it can display up to 144FPS. It can run 60FPS, if that is all you got from your PC.
1440p means, it can display up to 1440p. If you loose the FPS you want for 1440p gaming, you can simply try to reduce the resolution and play on 1080p. You can not play 1440p on 1080p monitor.
You can also simply reduce the game settings to reach higher FPS.


For me, if you have the money for 1440p 144hz, I would rather go this route.
This is like future proofing your monitor.
People tend to keep the monitor longer than the PC too.
How good is a gaming PC? You see via a monitor.
I would not skimp out on monitor.
The only reason to get less good monitor is only the budget...and only the budget.

Thing is, on the games you play, getting 144 or even 100 FPS wouldn't give any sort of advantage, and the games you do play can be enjoyed just as well on a 60 Hz monitor as well. Plus, you'll probably need to overclock your CPU if you want high refresh rate, and you can't do that with the motherboard you have. In my honest opinion, go with 1440p 60 Hz, 144 Hz gaming is still not something you achieve on the cheap.

It is not about the most efficient option.
The best option is to get one of those 1440p 144/165Hz IPS display with GSync.

For gaming, 144hz is like a must for me.
Going higher resolution (fit to monitor size and viewing distance) is also very important.
You will notice everything.

It is more about how much you actually want to spend.
like said.
There is nothing wrong about getting 1440p 144Hz monitor instead of 1080p 144hz.

Just look first into your pocket!

if you start loosing FPS by staying on 1440p, you simply run on 1080p anytime you want...assuming you do not want to upgrade your PC.
You can not run 1440p gaming on 1080p.
It is this simple.

jumping from 60Hz to 144hz is also huuuuuugggeeee!

Seriously, look into your pocket first and let it decide for you, which monitor suits you best!
I always decouple my decision on buying the monitor out of my PC capability.
I let my pocket do the main talking.

1440p monitor's are mostly larger beginning at 27", this size is quite nice at an arms length away. If you're used to 24" that wont matter but it will if you got used to 27".

1070 will still do nicely in 1440p and more so especially i find don't really need antialiasing on so there's a few extra frames there.

144Hz is nice to have, not just in games but browsing and general windows stuff too.

I think if you went with a 1440p monitor you wouldn't be as happy running at 60Hz compared to 144Hz. In saying that if you can afford a 1080p 144Hz gsync monitor, that would change your gaming experience for better.

Few options here to look at for 1080p gsync in various sizes. Just scroll through to see the 1080p variants. Check Hz though not sure all are 144Hz.

I think you have to start sort things out in your mind.

not with all the taxes in amazon <--- this is valid reason not to get more expensive item. You must let your pocket to do the loudest word!

the gtx 1070 i ordered is already shipping <-- not a valid reason. You can simply send this item back and order the thing you really want. I am using amazon to do almost all of my shopping. I do that quite often.
