A good PC would cost?

So I really want a better PC that I currently have for gaming.
I don't want to get everything new just modify some stuff.
Here is my current PC config -
Motherboard - Intel S-Series GA-G41MT-S2 (thats what is says on the manual) (supports DDR3 RAM with 3 RAM slots)
OS - Windows XP SP3 (Gonna get win 7 for sure next month)
RAM - 4.1 GB DDR3 RAM (but XP allows me to use only 3.21 GB , hence I am getting win 7)
Graphics card - Nvidia 9800GT 1 GB GDDR3 VRAM (Yes I have to buy a new graphics card cuz I'm getting win 7 and this card supports only till DX10)
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93 GHz 92 CPUs)
Hard drive - 160 GB (External Hard Drive of 750 GB)

That is pretty much it (that's all I know).
So please suggest any modifications.(Not too high like Nvidia quadro 6000 6GB GDDR5 or stuff like that , I'm not Bill Gates)

With your current system, here is what I would do...

Get the graphics card - 150$
Get the CPU - 120$
Get the HDD - 65$
Get Windows 7 - 100$

435$

You will be good to go.

You are pretty much looking at a new build. Maybe reuse your case. Maybe reuse your power supply depending on what it is.

I'd look at an i3 or maybe quad core i5. Get the base essential motherboard that has the features you will want 3 years ahead, USB3, etc. Hard drives are super expensive right now because of the floors in Thailand. So maybe reuse yours for now till the price comes down and do a disk copy with Ghost or something or some free ghosting software.

The key is look for COMBO deals. Newegg has tons of them. If I had 2 hours to sit and put together a $700 system I bet you could get an $800 system with combo deals. Be smart with your money.

personally i'd take PCgamers suggestion, subtract the burner, the HDD and the case and bump up the cpu to the cheaper i5.
There's probably a case for an AMD build.

You're right. He should get the i5 2500k for 50-75$ more and he would be a lot better off in the long run.

As a side note, I would advise you to steer clear of AMD CPUs for gaming. Intel smokes 'em at equal clock speeds, and it's not even close.

Make sure to get the 64 bit OS and Seagate Barracuda 1TB are NOT $65 anymore unless you find a local dealer with previously purchased drives on hand who isn't price gouging.
Although I wouldn't really blame him for asking current market price. I saw them for $140 on Amazon $150 on Newegg.

You don't need a GPU that supports DX11 just to support Windows 7.
You just won't be able to play DX11 games on your card.
