The 960 is a better preforming card. But no, there isn't a huge performance gap between the two. Its a 30-50$ price jump from the two. I would go with the 960 personally for the price difference.

I'm looking at the R9 380 but does the back plate make it any wider then a card with no black plate? I have the ram slots right behind it and I have a Zotac 750 ti right now.

I like the R9 380x if gaming is your main goal. Averages 5-10 frames better (witch is a fair amount) on most games at the same price point as the 960. The 960 is more efficient power wise and I feel is a more well rounded card. But the 390x is a better gaming card imo.
