My Miner character broke his pickax. I've searched all the venders and can
not find another one for sale. Does anyone know where they are for sale?

If you want to put 70 of your 700 character skill points into the tinkering
skill, you can make your own picks & shovels reliably and not need to buy
them. A normal pick is good for 50 uses. An exceptional GM (100 skill) pick
is good for 100 uses.

http://uo.stratics.com/ is a website with a *lot* of information on UO. The
lists to the left and right sides of the screen are links. It's not all
up-to-date info but most of it is worth reading. The Professions list on the
right side has a The Miner listing which is worth reading. A Mining skill
link is in The Skills list on the left side.

There is a lot to this game. It can give you something to do no matter what
mood your in, from herding sheep to player-vs-player combat on the Fellucca
facet.

And until you have a character with mostly Grandmastered combat skills and a
*lot* of high powered trinkets to boost your skills, STAY OUT OF FELLUCCA. A
miner there is merely a moving target for the player killers (PKers) that
love killing and robbing other players characters, having their fun at your
expense. You get double resources there but your odds of making it out with
them are not good. I've over four years in this game and going there with my
miner usually gets him dead as soon as a pker checks that mining spot on his
rounds.

Trammel, Ilsheanar, and Malas are only player-vs-monster unless you join a
guild and it is involved in Factions or chooses to war with another guild.

I am still learning things about this game even after having been here so
long. There is a lot to do and learn in this Land you have begun to explore.
And when you think you have seen & done it all, you'll find they've added
something else. :)

Tinkers and/or provisioners

I have looked in the Tinker shops and Blacksmith shops in ever city I visit,
none of the have a pick axe. I can't even find any shovels. I guess I'll
have to give up mining until something changes.

I just started playing on a suggestion of a friend. I'm pregnant and
confined to bed for an unknown period, this game is a lot of fun and really
passes the time. I was going nuts before I started playing.

Now, I'm making money by escorting people from one city to another. They
usually give 200-300 GP for an escort. Mining and making armor through
blacksmithing was profinable but without mining the iron is too expensive.

Any other good ways to make money? I eventually want to build a house.

What shard are you playing? If you are on Chesapeak let me know and I'll
give you a hand with that. Free even :)

Most people with miners just pick up tinkering. For your miner you would
just single click the tinker and have him train you by dropping the
right amount of money on him which will take you to ~30 tinkering. From
there you just use several thousand ingots to get to ~50 tinkering and
you can make your own shovels from ingots.

You will get there much faster this way.

Mage character are good. Go to Despise and cast lots of blade spirits.
The game is a little odd right now, hides sell for 1 gold and cut
leather which you make from hides with a pair of scissors sells for
12-15. It's pretty easy to wipe out cows, cut them up for hides, cut the
hides up to leather, and make a fortune. Lizardmen on Despise upper
level have something like 15 hides plus gold which makes them a good kill.

I would say the next best profession would be going after hide bearing
animals like cows, goats, & hinds, gathering both the hides and the meat.
Each hide weighs 5 pounds until you use scissors on them and then has cut
hides they weigh one pound each. You can make these into shoes and sandals
using a sewing kit to start and, at near GM, make leather & studded armors
which sell for a nice price to the npc vendors. The meat sells at the north
inn by the northern stables in Britan for something like 6 gold each after
it's cooked, or half that uncooked. You can cook it by using a skillet sold
on one of the npc vendors at an oven in the inn or the bakery shop.

A good spot for gathering hides is north of Britan and on Barrier Isle off
the shore of Trinsic (accessable via a bridge). Watch out for brigands on
Barrier Isle since they spawn often. You can lead them back by the bridge
and yell Guards! to get the city watch to kill them for you. Once your
combat skill is in the forties, try Moonglow Isle south of the cemetary. It
is full of brown bears and hinds.

Train in either magery or chivalry for a magical self-heal ability (and get
a spell travel ability using marked runes), or train
in Healing/Anatomy to be able to use bandages made by buying rolls of cloth
and using scissors on them twice. The spell healing is faster but can be
fizzled by being hit so back away first. Bandage healing isn't bothered much
by being hit and takes less than 10 seconds though it commonly fails at less
than 50 skill in healing.

Good luck with RL and with the game. The game definitly beats the tar out of
T.v. doesn't it? :)

The lack of pick axes for sale was a stupid mistake on my part. I didn't
realize that the list of items for sale, and other lists, could be scrolled
by dragging the red ribbon. Just blame it on a newbie.

I still got a lot of valuable information from your answers. Thank you.

Which shard are you on? I can provide supplies of tinkered items on Europa,
and there are plenty of small spots for houses available if you don't mind
being a bit remote. In fact I have a house in Yew which needs a good owner,
but it is under a tree :)
