A power surge damaged my computer, I think

Recently because of lighting my power went of for a second, I unplugged everything hoping nothing had been hurt, when I turned my computer back on it seemed fine at first but started to stop responding and eventually froze. This happens everytime I turn it on and the length of time it works fine seems to be inconsistent. Any ideas what it could be? Is something damaged? if so, what?

Well, my first guess in that situation is the PSU. Do you have another you can test with? Or can you test that PSU in another system?

I have a very old laptop. But that's another thing, my laptop was plugged in also and it's completely fine.

This is completely random (seemingly), but try clearing the CMOS. Sometimes that fixes the strangest things that it shouldn't.

How would you reccomend I go about doing that? There seem to be different methods.

Unplug the PSU first and then you can either remove the CMOS battery for 30 seconds, or there should be pins on the board that you can short with a jumper to accomplish that as well.

When you say "Unplug the PSU" do you mean to just unplug it from it's power source or to full blown remove it?

Just unplug it from the wall (or at the back of the PSU).
