A Question about 2:3 and 4:5 MEMORY DIVIDERS!!

hi folks, if i overclock my p4 2.4 chip to 3.4 (280 FSB), i could run my RAM either @224Mhz (4:5) or 186Mhz (2:3), right? so now my question is, would there be a noticeable difference at all in games between RAM @224Mhz @CL2 & RAM @186Mhz @CL3??.. what kind of a framerate increase would we be looking at here should i go for 224Mhz @CL2 (ram setup: two 512mb sticks in dual channel mode)? 5% at most or so? kingston pc3500 CL2 modules are expensive as hell over here in canada, especially if ya shooting for two 512mb modules, that would cost ya an arm and a leg for sure, so i m currently looking into going the pc3200 CL3 route instead, if its worth it that is..

opinions anyone? any and all input would be most appreciated 😉
 
Would the difference be noticable? Probobly not. At least in the near future. Also depends on the vid card. But it sonds like you are building a state of the art machine. Why go cheap on the memory. Do yourself a favor and get some PC4000. If you have to save $$$$. Get 2x256 for now.

Don't forget that most 2.4C can't get to 3.4

When you're buying your 2.4C be sure it's made from Malaysia, and when u get home first thing is to check the vcore at default speed, they range from 1.475 to 1.550. i got 1.48 so that's very good, see if you can find 1 runs under 1.5

1 gig of pc4000 ram? that would cost an arm and a leg over here for sure.. if the difference aint noticeable i ll stick w/pc3200 CL3 for now.. gonna upgrade in a year or so anyway
 
i dont think it says country of origin right on the retail box, much less core V.. but thanks for info 😉
 
On the box it does say where the chip was made. But voltage you'll have to find out on ur own.

I think you're mixed up, MORE MHz usually means MORE latency, so that memory which runs at 224MHz CL3 would likely run 186MHz CL2. CL2 is faster than CL3.

no, pc3200 CL3 would not work @224Mhz @CL2. maybe CL3 though

have u even read the original post? if u did, ya would see that it eventually boils down to pc3200 CL3 versus pc3500 (which are all CL2 i believe). u need pc3200 to run @2:3 & pc3500 to run @4:5 on 280 FSB.

at any rate, does anyone have any FPS % difference stats?? is pc3500 ultimately worth going for or not? i wouldnt want to shell out an extra 100 bucks on something that would only give me 5 or 6 extra fps @1024*768!
 
From where I live, there's little price difference between 3700 and 2700. for 512 Dual Channel kit difference is only about 100 dollars(canadian), 3200 to 3700 is about 80 dollars 3500 to 3700 is about 20 dollars. I'm just comparing price within the same brand. Because OCZ here cost a LOT more than Corsair.

The second part of your question sounded like an entirely different question!

You'd probably get and extra 5 or 6 FPS in a good game with the faster memory. Hehe. Depending on how the game uses system RAM. But 5 or 6 FPS in a game that only runs 22-50FPS would do a heck of a lot to help the slowest parts play more smoothly.

True, but I don't think ram's going to make that much difference, 5-6 frames difference max at about 100 frames average. Better graphics card and CPU is what you should put your money into.

are ya in BC? i m in ON, and i cant even get corsair over here!! kingston is the best i can get, but its right on par w/corsair or so it seems, so thats just fine with me. & i dont wanna get ocz, way too many people were scammed by them for my tastes 😉

anyhow, 1 gb of pc3500 would run me $470+taxes. 1 gb of pc3200 CL3 would be about $100-120 less. why waste a hundred bucks on extra 5 fps? provided thats the case of course.

if someone w/rad9500/9600/9700/9800 pro could gimme 2 sets of RtCW or UT2003 fps figures (1024*786 or 1280*1024 would be fine) i would appreciate it! that is, 180-200@CL3 vs 220-230@CL2)

Corsair does overclock better than Kingston. And I like their new policy on the 3700/4000 series, they cover dimm up to 2.9 while kingston only 2.8

thats what i m thinking too. if its only going to be 5-6 fps more @100fps, and 2-3 fps more @50fps, then it would make no sense whatsoever to go for much more expensive pc3500 ram.
 
oh yeah? thanks for info, didnt know that as i wasnt looking into getting pc3700 or pc4000 any time soon. i dont even want to get pc3500 for [-peep-] sakes! 😉
 
I'm psycho at overclocking, so I need good ram to live, as soon as DDR4200 becomes available, RMA my 3700 demand for full cash refund(which i always get), and get the DDR4200, I'm looking forward for the OCZ or Corsair DDR4200. Don't like Geil memory, cheap but crap overclockability, same with HyperX.

i m into overclocking big time myself, but seeing how my system is already gonna run me over $3,000 CAN i dont feel like spending extra dough where there is little to no outcome. besides, would have to upgrade anyway later down the road when doom3 finally comes out etc.. all that extra money would be much better spent on a new VGA/etc next year.

RMA'ing for full refund all the time eh ya say? how many times have ya done it w/corsair memory so far? 😀
 
Oh that's trick at the place where i buy my stuff, they offer 3 month full money refund LOL, on OCZ and Corsair memory. Because OCZ and Corsair give them some sort of offer, which I don't really care, as long as i'm getting full cash back i'm happy.

The only HyperX ram i liked was my PC2700 rated 166 at 2-2-2-5 but it did 230mhz at 3-4-4-11. LOL, that was just a freak of nature, never happened again when I bought the HyperX 3500 wouldn't go above 225 no matter how high the latency is.
