hello,

So im planning on buying a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 2.1) motherboard. I've read the F.A.Q and there's an answer about weight limit of the cpu cooler heatsink being 450g. But i have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 evo whitch is 465g. Can i just ignore it and use it or no?

Solution

Yeah, I dont know about that. I can pretty much guarantee a 465gram cooler is not going to crush your cpu socket or something, the hyper 212 evo is not a particularly big or heavy cooler. Like I said just be careful moving it.if you are worried.

Well first I have to ask why you are buying a motherboard on a 6 year old platform in 2017? Your money would be much better spent on say a ryzen or modern intel system.

To answer your question I would think that cooler would be fine, just be careful moving the system around with the heatsink attached.

i must be honest, never seen such reply n any manufacturer mainboard

some heatsinks will come with a backplate to make the weight of the heatsink properly distributed but iirx the evo is not one of them

i do believe that many people have done that mix, a 970 mainboard and a evo 212 and nothing has happened

but as dunlop said, if this is new build, no, a am3+ platform, is a bad idea this days, ryzen is here and wipes the floor with am3 cpus

The specified weight limit is most probably for heatsinks that come without a backplate. Afaik, the heatsink you have does feature a backplate for mounting, therefore it should pose no problem.

Then again, you might be better off replacing CPU & Mainboard, or even CPU, Mainboard and RAM, as that investment probably isn't far away anyway.

The 212 evo does come with a backplate, my old system was a 212 evo and an fx 6350 and I had to use the backplate. This is also the first time I have ever seen someone mention a weight limit for a cooler on a motherboard. I bet I could strap a 1320g nh d15 to that mobo without issue.
