hello my friend has recent purchased a new pc and the GPU is a Geforce GTX 1080TI and his current monitor is a Acer GN246HL 1920x1080 144hz the ports on the monitor is HDMI, VGA and DVI in order to get the 144HZ refresh rate out of the monitor he has to use a VGA cable since his previous GPU had one my friend not noticing until after he purchased the pc realised the gtx 1080 doesnt have VGA. my question is could he use a Displayport to VGA adapter and still keep the 144HZ refresh rate or will he require a new monitor.

ill leave a link below showing what im on about, if this particular thing doesn't work and you know of something that might work could you let me know.

If the 1080 card does not have a DVI connection, you will need a DP to Dual Link DVI adapter like this one https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/DisplayPort-to-Dual-Link-DVI-D-Active-Adapter-M-F/3266720.aspx?cm_cat=GoogleBase&cm_ite=3266720&cm_pla=NA-NA-VSK_CC&cm_ven=acquirgy&ef_id=WEh26QAAQGbV31PQ:20170607135937:s&gclid=Cj0KEQjwyN7JBRCZn7LKgb3ki8kBEiQAaLEsqgpkErVypFjVFbX6uAU9YFWUsgUV7lHIQr5L8oTB5aAaAqoq8P8HAQ&s_kwcid=AL!4223!3!198553132056!!!g!106063181299! but there are several versions of these active adapters, you may want to check with the video card maker which they recommend to use. This adapter is $140 but may be needed...
VGA isn't capable of putting out more than 60Hz at 1080p. In addition, all of the GTX 10xx cards that even have DVI only have digital DVI-D, so there's no way to use VGA without an active adapter, but you won't get 144hz out of it since VGA can't handle it. If your 1080 ti (didn't tell us brand) has a DVI port, then you can get 144hz using a DVI dual link cable. If your monitor supports HDMI 2.0 (I'm 99% sure it doesn't) you would also be able to get it that way. Otherwise, you're SOL on normal passive cables. The only way to get 144hz without a DVI port on that monitor is probably an "active displayport to dual link DVI adapter."

EDIT: VGA is obsolete, there's no reason to be using analog signal for display anymore. All new high-res or refresh rate monitors use displayport and possibly HDMI 2.0. People still use dual-link DVI sometimes for 1080p @ 144hz.
