A question about Haswell onboard VRM

Hello;

Since the Haswell i7-4770k has onboard vrm, does the onboard vrm on an ASUS Z87 motherboard become a bit redundant? Perhaps I am confusing the two?

The VRM (FIVR) on the processor supplies voltage for the CPU and graphics cores, SA, IO and PLL. The VRM on the motherboard steps down the +12.0V from the power supply to a voltage value that is suitable as a supply voltage for the FIVR. Hope this explanation helps.
 
Ok thank you yes that does clear it up for me.

Seems like having the FIVR on the chip though would contribute to the cpu's temp under load. This might be of concern to over-clockers though.
 
Yes it does add to the overall package temperature. The plus side is more independent voltage rails and quicker transient response.
