It shows up with the 1st item that causes a pollution icon in the city
display. Typically, the 1st time you have a size 13 city.

Yeah, it is an indicator of how bad global warming is.

Bush and his "science advisors" seem to believe it's bad science;
unfortunately, his science advisors seem to be on intellectual and
operational par with his "intelligence advisors."

"No WMDS = No Global Warming!"

Remember, in Bush's view the Environment itself is part of the Axis of Evil,
and Must Be Destroyed! Or is that Cheney's view? No matter, they're
indistinguishable anyway, and the Wyoming Madman is probably running things
anyway....

Basically, but you cannot get rid of it if you have *any* size 13+ cities or
pollution generating improvements.

It's not bad, just an indicator. At lower levels of difficulty human
player can usually keep pollution and global warming under control.
Build mass transit and recycling plants early, and prevent nuclear
proliferation. The sunny will remain yellow.

At higher difficulty levels (above Emperor) it's not always possible to
prevent AI-governed nations from polluting the Earth. The worst thing
they can do is to discharge all their nukes, making the sun purple orange.
From the gameplay point of view it's not the end, some forests will turn into
tundra and such, but that's all.

I must say, I am far more fond of Civ 3's implementation than Civ 2's.
Remember that one? The sun gets worse and worse until all at once there
is a massive change across the globe and the sun 'resets' itself,
balanced to the new equilibrium. Then the cycle begins again. I MUCH
prefer the Civ 3 way of just changing a tile here and there from time to
time.
