A Series of Video Game Issues

Well, I will admit, these issues are in all likelihood my fault because I recently deleted many unused (or so I thought) programs and files on my laptop. I have an hp pavilion computer with Windows 7 installed. I do not speak computer lingo AT ALL so I really have no idea what is going on.

This weekend, I tried to play a game called System Shock 2, which I downloaded from GOG.com many months ago. Upon opening the program, I noticed that there was no sound, and that many objects, textures and doors in the game were missing entirely. However, there was sound in the game's introduction. Earlier that day, I installed a cheat code file into the game folder called "user.cfg" which contained the cheats for god mode, 0 weapon deterioration, and no enemy respawn. The last 2 cheats did not work, but I thought nothing of it. (Yes I know I'm not getting the full gaming experience by using cheats and that I'm a weenie I've heard the speech before....). I tried re-installing the game from GOG.com but the same thing happened.

I also found out that NONE of my other games will stay open without crashing. What could I have deleted that would have caused this? And can I reinstall it? Please help me!

Thanks,

Solution
Well when you delete things, old registry entries are left behind, and "could" clog up the system causing errors/slowdowns. The registry is how your computer keeps track of where key files are located, and where to go to look for things (like where the data in the My Documents folder actually is)
But if all your games are crashing you probably got rid of some key file that tells them where they need to look for things (or you deleted the thing they were looking for.)
Why were you deleting things that you didn't know what they were for? (and that you didn't confirm their purpose with a google search before deleting)
You can check out this as a possible way to get SS2 working right: https://www.systemshock.org/index.php/topic,106.0.html
Well, you probably royally screwed something up, but what noone can really know.
On the SS front: check out system shock portable: https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=211.0
on the everything else is FUBAR front: you can try using CCleaner to clean up your registry: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
but if that actually makes a difference is a good question.
Reinstalling windows would "fix" it, you probably have a restore partition on your HDD since you got a HP computer, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8fES1ejLXA or search for one that applies more closely to your system.

Well, thanks for the suggestion, but I have the second System Shock game, and I already checked out the troubleshooting portion of their site, which did not assist me. What does cleaning the registry do?

I didn't delete anything that I didn't know what it was for, which is why I am confused. After I went on the computer cleaning spree, I continued to play without fault. It was only after I shut down the game to take a break did the problems start. And thanks for the link I will check it out.
