Hello,

I will be receiving a GTX 1060 tomorrow, but my new amd fx 8320 cpu and 500 watt evga psu will not arrive until christmas. Would it be safe for me to test the gtx 1060 on my old fx 4300 cpu and cheap 400 watt psu just to make sure it works until i get my new parts? I'm buying it from a friend, and i wont be able to see him after Tuesday, so i really need to know if it's in working condition.

Solution
It will work without the manufacturer's drivers but only inasmuch as providing a video signal to your monitor - - which at least will prove that it's working.

But you won't be able to set the correct display resolution or use any of the GPU's advanced features until you install the manufacturer's driver package.
I think you would be safe in testing it, as long as you don't do anything 'Stressful' with the GPU then you should be perfectly fine, if you have the PCIe connectors on the PSU as well to connect the GPU, then you can just boot into Windows to test if it works correctly.
