No leaning 🙁 But it sounds like there could be a great many funny and UHOH
situations:

"I knocked out a guard who was standing next to a table with some junk on
it. He fell and hit the table, knocking it over, and sent the objects on the
table flying, making a ton of noise."

LOL

But no leaning! I use that a lot 🙁

I assume with 3rd person they think you won't need it - you switch
between 1st and 3rd for a sec, scope out what's around the corner,
then switch back.

Ahh.. but I hide in the shadows and whack them while they're looking for
me - by leaning forward in the shadows they never know what hit them LOL -
but I guess that's cheating anyways, so it might be just as well...

Maybe you can still lean forward, but not sideways ?

Cheating? No, I reckon it would work IRL, so it can't be cheating.

How do you lean forward? Do you mean lean sideways and rotate so you're
kind of leaning forward at the same time, or is there some technique I
haven't used in 600 missions?

There was a combination of keys set for that in the game, but I always
change it to just Q, W & E for lean left, forward & right.

You can lean forward - IIRC, I always the middle mouse button assigned
to it.

Handy for hiding in shadows and leaning forward to blackjack guards,
and standing on ledges, to shoot guards down below.

Huh. Well, that's both neat and annoying. Why didn't someone magically

I remember one taffer in the forum, that by chanse discovered that you could
run in Thief after playing it for, well can't say I remember just how long,
but well over a year 🙂 Everybody agreed that this particular taffer must
be one hell of a good one, as this person had been around for a long time
and managed fine without ever having to run away from nothing !

Well, I never run in Thief. I get annoyed when I find speed potions
instead of ones more useful to me. I don't usually ghost missions, but I
try to avoid being noticed.

well.... what I do is - if there's a lot of guards and a noisy floor, and I
have no moss arrow, I jump on the tiles or whatever to get the guards in
alert stage. I step into the shadow, and then when they come looking for me,
I lean forward with my blackjack ready. Then when they get close enough-
whack - one down, whack - one more down, so on until I have a nice pile of
meanies in front of me :-D

I don't think that would work IRL, and I always feel like a cheater when I
do it... but it's still fun! LOL

Well, look at the bright side: You have become even more skilful by going

I often find out little tips about games I've played for years.

Embarrasing and annoying, but nice. :)

Right. I'd still be stuck in those crates in the
warehouse mission in Thief 2 if I hadn't learned
how to run and jump UP! ;-)

My favoured movement key mappings are:-

Q: Lean Left
W: Run Forward
E: Lean Right

A: Rotate Left
S: Walk Forward
D: Rotate Right

Z: Sidestep Left
X: Walk Backwards
C: Sidestep Right

Space: Jump (only)

I can't remember my crouch key off the top of my head. I should really
play some more Thief...

What I should do is reconfigure some of them thusly:-

A: Frob

S: Walk Forward

X: Walk Backwards

E: Drop Flashbomb (custom)

Tab: Drop Mine (custom)

,: Rotate left
..: Rotate right

Guess the game that inspired that, and what the keys mentioned do in
it. ;-)

Call me old-fashioned, but I remapped the lockpick keys as well.

I suppose it also saves finger strain a bit, and is harder to mistype
when you're trying to touchplay in the dark. ;-)

I finished both Thief 1 and 2, and lots of fan missions, before I
found there WAS a block. :)

Even then, I never used it, as I rarely fought guards hand to hand.

I pretty much play to avoid the guards or disable them without being
noticed, but I do try to keep escape routes in mind. It's nice knowing
about the river tunnel or the ledge where they can't follow you.
Supposedly the guards are smarter in T3. Supposedly.

I finished Thief 2 (almost -- last mission is boooooring) and two
dozens of FMs. I never used flashbombs. I never used block (if I'm
actually fighting, I step back from enemy swings; after victory, I'm
usually reloading my last save). I very rarely used fire-arrows. I used
slowfall potion only if that was absolutely necessary. Usually, I
finished a classic T2 mission with far more equipment then I had at the
start -- I'm such a pack rat. 🙂

BTW, recently I finished "Rainbow Six" -- tactical shooter game. This
game also has several missions where your purpose to be unnoticed. Sure,
feelings are different, but the hiding has something similar to Thief.
Somebody have had experience with a game like that?

I usually avoid hand-to-hand as well, but it's nice to know that I have
the option just in case. It isn't always practical to back away.
