Should I buy a used 3 week old 6700k thats been overclocked to 4.7GHz for $370? dumb, smart? I can't find it new for lower than $440

Solution
ok cool, looks good. The reason it shows 798 mhz, is because the CPU throttles its clock speed down when it isnt being used much. ANd that CPU-Z image is from a different site. Its on google images aswell, see here- http://hexus.net/tech/news/cpu/84626-intel-core-i7-6700k-skylake-flagship-cpu-benchmarks-surface/
Do me a favour, ask him wether thats his own cpu-z screenshot or if its one from google images. see what he says.
Hi, sounds like a good deal. It wont stay overclocked because the overclock settings are stored on the motherboard, not the CPU. Of coursae, overclocking does reduce the lifespan of a CPU, but if its only 3 weeks old, then it wont be affected by any overclocking the previous owner may have done. It seems like a good deal, go for it! :)

Well it doesnt matter WHY they are selling it. You dont know their circumstances. There is no reason to be suspicuous just because it is being sold for cheaper. Maybe be susp[icuous if it was online for like $100 or something but $370 is a good price. ANd it doesnt matter what YOU would pay, maybe you dont want to get a 6700K. Obviously the OP does want a 6700K and there is nothing wrong with the deal they have found. Thats the simple truth.

Well, im pretty sure the OP woulodnt be looking to buy it if it had issues. Just because someone is selling something recently released, doesnt mean that its faulty. For all we know they could have an i7 4790K in another machine and they decided they wanted to upgrade. Because the 6700K is pretty much the same as a 4790K in performance, he decided to sell it. There are endless posibilities as to why the person wants to sell it, but i highly doubt they would sell something without saying it had problems.

Its not your money to fantasize with fortunately, so if the OP decides to go ahead he can be very careful to be sure he is getting what he thinks he is , and that if it is, it is in good condition
Hell is even possible its one of those dodgy chips that turn up from Asia . Usually a pentium with a nice new set of markings on it

Well Im going to make sure it works before I buy it. Put it in a rig and run some CPU intensive benchmarks. I'll also ask why he's selling it. Are there any signs of de-lidding I can look for?

yup, it must be the laws of supply and demand. Another place I was gonna buy from had it for $370 but they had a backlog of 6000-7000 orders and their next shipment was gonna be Dec 9th for only 1200 or so of them so I might not have got mine till February or something.

That, or all the retailers conspired to be jackasses

oK, that sounds like a good plan. There wont be any visible signs of de-lidding, but just ask the guy selling it and he will tell you.

whoa wtf thats some shady shit right there. Im definitely gonna go into this skeptical as fuck. this is weird thanks for all your help. I'll definitely ask him that.

I don't have a rig right now so I can't test it, so if he sells off all his parts before we meet up then I won't be able to test it. I told him I don't have a rig to test it so hopefully he's not an idiot and does that cause if that happens, theres no way I'm gonna do this lol.

He was gonna sell all the parts together but I asked him to only sell the 6700k and he said he would. He made it known that he's doing me a favor
